PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: Is able to apply knowledge of volume of solid figures and

meter reading in mathematical problems and real- life
situations.

LEARNING COMPETENCY : 71. Derives the formula for finding the volume of
cylinders, pyramids, cones and spheres

Code : M6ME-IVa-96

UNPACKED: (day 1 out of 2 days)

71. 1. Derives the formula for finding the volume of

cylinders and cones.

Find the volume of a cylinder and a cone.

Materials : Ruler , cans cylinders, cones

Activity 1 :

1. Mental computation solving the area of a circle

2. Measure the diameter of the cylinder . What is its radius?

Motivation : Present a story problem:

Water is indispensable because of its many uses. However, Alegria Central Elementary School
do not have enough supply of water . They need to store water using jars. plastic containers,
drums and water tanks. The PTA put up a project of installing an electric water pump with a
cylindrical tank with a radius of 6dm and 20dm high. How many liters of water does it contain?

Developmental Activities :

A. Let the group discuss the following questions and record their answers or ideas.
Afterwards they can share them to the class.
1. Why is water important? What are its uses?

2. Do you only need to conserve if your place do not have enough supply of water? Why and
why not?

3. How can we conserve water?

4. What did Carlo’s father install in their house? What is its shape?

5. What are the dimensions of the tank?

6. What are we asked to find?

7. Do you know how to find its volume?

Discussion:

1. Let the pupils illustrate the tank. Let them write/put the given data correctly.

Ex. Radius = 6 dm

Height = 18 dm Height = 18 dm

Radius = 6 dm

Volume of a cylinder is Volume of a cone is

V= ᴫ ( r2 ) h V= 1/3 ᴫ ( r2 ) h

The formula of the volume of cylinder is derived from the area of the circular base times its
height . While for the cone its volume is 1/3 the volume of the cylinder.

2. Practice Exercises

Find the volume of each of the following figures

1) r = 5cm , h=8cmr = 10cm , h= 7cm r = 3dm r = 4cm

h = 8dm h = 10cm
CONTEXTUALIZED ASSESSMENT:

Let the pupil make a cylinder and cone then solve the volumes of their figure made.

Find the volume of a Pyramids.

Materials : Ruler , pyramids, rectangular prism

Activity 1 :

1. Mental computation solving the area of a rectangle , triangle and volume of a prism.

2. Measure the length , width and height of the pyramid also the the rectangular prism

Motivation : Present these figures : L= 8cm

w = 8cm

H = 10cm

Developmental Activities :

ACTIVITY 2. Let’s Check It !

(Present the rectangular prism and pyramid previously made of the same base and height.)
1. Measure length and width of the base and the height of the rectangular prism and the pyramid.
What is the formula of the volume of rectangular prism ? V= l w h

2. Fill the pyramid with water then pour it to rectangular prism . How many pyramids can fill
the rectangular prism? So,based on the activity. What is the formula of the volume of pyramid?
The volume of pyramid is one third of the volume of the rectangular prism.

3. Do you know how to find the volume of pyramid?

The formula of the volume of pyramid is derived from the area of the volume of rectangular prim
divided by three. V= 1/3 (l w h )

3. Practice Exercises

Find the volume of each of the following pyramid

1) l = 5cm , w= 5cm h = 8cm

2) l = 10cm , w= 7cm h = 10dm
