Earth Structure Earth was formed approximately 4.5 billion yrs ago. It is made up of thin layered structures or shells surrounded by a soft interior. Earths outermost, rigid , rocky layer is called crust. Crust are divided to huge rigid blocks called plate that contains the world continents. Below the crust is the mantle, a layer of extremely hot rocks which makes some of its parts dense. The inner part of the earth is called core. Continental Drift Theory Plates do not remain at rest in their positions. Instead, they move like boats drifting aimlessly around the mantle. Plates move very slowly - around five centimeters every year. These movements cause earthquakes, volvanic eruptions and formation of mountain rages such as the Himalayas. Mountain ranges can be formed through the collision of the plates. This also explains the continents change of position over millions of years.
