Dear English Learner,

Get ready to speak confidently with these English expressions. I recommend reading these
sample sentences out loud and using the blank space on the last page to answer my challenge

Summer Vacation Vocabulary

Road trip: when you drive a long distance to get somewhere

Some of my favorite memories from childhood are road trips to visit family
around the country.

To meet up with: to meet someone at a different location

We made plans to meet up with our friends in Spain while we were traveling.

To rent: paying to use something

We rented an RV for our vacation, so we could drive and sleep whenever we


wanted to.

Hiking: a walk in the wilderness, sometimes in the mountains

We wanted to visit that national park because of its popular hiking trails.

Rock climbing: climbing on cliffs or mountains using special gear

I had never been rock climbing before our vacation, but I tried it and loved it!

Bonfire: a big fire you build outdoors, usually as part of a celebration or gathering

When we go camping, we build a bonfire to keep us warm and cook dinner.

Bug spray: a chemical that you put on your skin and/or clothing to prevent insect bites

When you go camping, don’t forget to pack the bug spray.

Sunblock: a cream or spray that you put on your skin to prevent sunburn

When you go to the beach, don’t forget to put on sunblock.

To watch: to take care of your property or animals while you’re away

I’m so thankful my neighbors are watching our house while we’re away.

To hang out: to spend time doing something casual, like talking or relaxing

On our vacation, we hung out with friends and family we hadn’t seen in a long
time.

To get stuck: to not be able to move, either physically or mentally

We got stuck at the airport when our flight was canceled.

Every time I try to talk to my boss in English, I just get stuck and can’t think of
the right words to say.

To find out: to learn or discover information

We found out our flight was canceled, so we had to make another plan for our
vacation.

A crowd pleaser: someone or something that is very entertaining

All the acts at the circus were good, but the woman who shot flaming arrows from
a bow using her feet was a real crowd pleaser.

To have a blast: to have a really good time

On our vacation, we had a blast trying different types of food and seeing all the
local attractions.

Silhouette: a shadow or an outline of something; a silhouette artist is someone who


specializes in making art that is a shadow or outline

The artist made a silhouette drawing of me and my mom and we looked almost
identical!

Souvenir: something that you keep as a reminder of a person, place, or event

I kept the pretty rock I found as a souvenir of our honeymoon in the mountains.

To bond and spending quality time: terms that you use when you spend meaningful
time with people; you bond when you spend quality time with someone

We had so much fun bonding and spending quality time with friends and
family on our vacation.

To get back to the real world: often used when something fun or enjoyable, like
vacation, is over.

Summer vacation was great! I slept in, ate lots of good food, and had fun with
friends and family. Now I have to get back to the real world and get back to
work.
