Kinematic Equations (CW)

Problem 1. A runner accelerates to 4.2 m/s2 for 10 seconds before winning the race. How far did he/she
run? (2)

a= 4.2 m/s2, t=10s, u=0, s=?

s= ut+ ½ at2 = ½ (4.2) (10)2 = 210 m

Problem 2. A plane starts from rest and accelerates uniformly over a time of 20 s for a distance of 300
m. Determine the plane's acceleration. (2)

u= 0, t=20s, s=300m, a=?

s= ut+ ½ at2

s= ½ at2

a= 2s/ t2 = 2(300)/202 = 1.5 m/s2

Problem 3. A ball free falls from the top of the roof for 5 seconds. How far did it fall? What is its final
velocity at the end of 5 seconds? (2)

t= 5s, a=9.81 m/s2, u=0, s=?. v=?

s= ut+ ½ at2 = ½ (9.81)(25) =123 m (3 s.f.)

v2=u2+2as= 2(9.81)(122.625)= 2405.9

v= √ 2405.9 = 49 m/s ( 2s.f)

Problem 4. A bobsled team accelerates the sled to go to 150 m/s in 3 seconds from rest. (a)What is the
sled's acceleration? (b) What is the distance the bobsled team traveled? (4)

a) u= 0, v= 150 m/s, t= 3s, a=?

a= 150-0/3 =50 m/s2

b) s= ut+ ½ at2 = ½ (50)(9) = 225 m

Problem 5. A bullet leaves a rifle with a velocity of 452m/s .While accelerating through the barrel of the
rifle, the bullet moves a distance of 0. 93 m. Determine the acceleration of the bullet. (2)

u=0, v= 452 m/s, s= 0.93s, a=?

v2= u2+2as

a= v2-u2/2s = (452)2/2(0.93)

=1.1 x 105 m/s2

Problem 6. The observation deck of the Empire State Building is 381 m above the street. Determine the
time required for a penny to free fall from the deck to the street below. (2)

s= 381m, t=?, a= 9.81 m/s2 , u=0 m/s

s= ut+ ½ at2

s= ½ at2

t2= 2s/a= 2(381)/9.81= 77.75

t= 8.8 s

Problem 7. A bowling ball is dropped on the Jupiter from a height of 3 meters with an initial velocity of
0.4 m/s. The acceleration of gravity on Jupiter is 24.5 m/s2. How long does it take for the bowling ball to
reach the surface of Jupiter? (2)

s= 3m, u= 0.4 m/s, a= 24.5 m/s2 , t=?

s= ut+ ½ at2

3 = 0.4t + ½ (24.5) t2

3= 0.4t + 12.25t2

12.25t2 +0.4t -3= 0

t= 0.48 s
Problem 8. A truck accelerates uniformly from rest to a speed of 9.2 m/s over a distance of 26.2 m.
Determine the acceleration of the truck. (2)

u= 0m/s, v= 9.2 m/s, s= 26.2m, a=?

v2=u2+2as

v2= 2as

a= v2/2s =(9.2)2/2x26.2 = 1.6 m/s2
