Introduction: In this laboratory the student will understand the repro-

duction process through an experiment

Theoretical foundation:

Bacteria, being single-celled prokaryotes, do not

have a male or female version. Bacteria reprodu-
ce asexually. In asexual reproduction, the
"mother" produces a genetically identical copy of
herself.
Objective: Bacteria reproduce through a process called bi-
Understand nary fission. During binary fission, the chromoso-
the repro- mes copy themselves, and form two genetically
duction pro- identical copies. The cell then increases in size
and divides into two new daughter cells. The two
cess in some
daughter cells are identical to the stem cell. Bi-
microorga-
nary fission can occur very quickly. Some spe-
nisms.
cies of bacteria can double their population in
less than ten minutes!

PROCEDURE:
Materials:
1. Put water into the bottle, approximately three-quarters of its capacity.
- A plastic 2. Remove the water from the bottle and heat it up a bit. Be careful, if the
bottle
water is very hot the yeast will die.
- A balloon.
3. Add the yeast packet (7 grams) and a tablespoon of sugar.
- Baker’s 4. Dissolve it
yeast
5. Pour the contents of the jug into the bottle.
- Sugar
6. Inflate the balloon to the lung, deflate and place it in the mouth of the
- Hot water bottle.
- A cup 7. Wait and observe the formation of small bubbles. In a few minutes the
balloon will start to inflate.
-A spoon
8. When you see that the balloon does not get bigger, remove it and add
more sugar to the mixture.
