SHOPPING ADDICTS
Shopping is a hobby
Shopping is one of our favorite hobbies. Many people in the US like going to a shopping mall
on a Saturday afternoon to buy clothing or gifts. Technology lovers enjoy looking at laptops,
tablets, and smartphones.
When shopping becomes a problem
But, for some people, shopping is more than a hobby: it's an addiction that has bad
consequences. People who have a shopping addiction buy things that they don't need. Some
shopping addicts like buying certain items such as things for the kitchen or shoes. Others
spend their money on different things.
What to do and what not to do for shopping addicts
Psychologists say that many people are shopping addicts because when they buy something,
they feel good about it, and they want to feel good again. Experts have this advice for
shopping addicts: don't have any credit cards, don't go shopping by yourself, write a shopping
list, and only buy what is on the list. Finally, find other ways to spend time, like going for a walk
or exercising.

Lilian Bland was born in Maidstone, UK, in 1878. She started working as a sports journalist and
photographer for newspapers in London. She went to live in Northern Ireland in 1900 after her
mother died. There she enjoyed taking photos of seagulls.
Lilian was the first woman who designed, built, and flew a plane. She built one in Ireland in
1910. It wasn't an easy thing to do. For example, she couldn't find a gas tank for her plane, so
she used an empty glass bottle. The plane flew for 30 yards. It was an extraordinary thing for
those days.
Lilian's father became very worried about his daughter because he felt that flying was
dangerous. A few months after she built and flew her plane, Lilian started a business buying
and selling cars. A year later she got married and went to live in Canada. She came back to
the UK in 1935 and died in 1971 at the age of 92.
Lilian lived at a time when women's place in society was very different from today. Women
couldn't even vote at that time. Her hobbies were smoking, wearing pants, doing martial arts,
driving cars, and painting.
