1. Location:
It is located in the center of the country, in the Andean region, bordered to the north by Boyacá, to the
east by Casanare, to the south by Meta and Huila, to the west by Tolima and Caldas, and by the capital
district of Bogotá which it encompasses except for the southeastern border.

2. Flag of Cundinamarca:
Antonio Nariño, being President of the State of Cundinamarca, was commissioned by the Serenissimo
Colegio Electoral, in session of July 17, 1813, to form the designs of the currencies, both in the flag
and coat of arms of the New Republic, as well as the army crest and the presidential sash.

By the Decree of September 15, 1813*, they were promulgated and officially replaced those of Spain.
The flag is composed of three colors: light blue, tan yellow and punched color.

3. People of Cundinamarca:
Cundinamarca is one of the departments with more history of the country, according to records these
lands have been inhabited since approximately 12,000 BC. Cundinamarca was the land of the Muiscas,
who left an invaluable cultural legacy to all the people of Cundinamarca. Its landscapes are an
inspiration for many artists, the cold of its savannas is made bearable by the warmth of the people who
inhabit it, who transmit kindness and hospitality to all who visit their lands. Bogota is located in
Cundinamarca, listed as the capital district of Colombia. Its gentilicio is cundinamarqueses.

4. General description of Cundinamarca:


The Department of Cundinamarca is located in the central part of the country, between 03º40'14'' and
05º50'11'' north latitude and 73º03'08'' and 74º53'35'' west longitude. It has an area of 24,210 km2
which represents 2.12% of the national territory. It is bordered on the north by the department of
Boyacá; on the east by the departments of Boyacá and Meta; on the south by the departments of Meta,
Huila and Tolima, and on the west by the Magdalena River, which separates it from the departments of
Tolima and Caldas.
4.1 Administrative Division:
The department of Cundinamarca is divided into 116 municipalities, 14 corregimientos, 177 police
inspectorates, as well as numerous hamlets and populated places. The municipalities are grouped into
58 notarial circles, with a total of 124 notary offices; 3 registry circles with headquarters in Santafé de
Bogotá and 13 sectional offices; 1 judicial district with circuit head offices in Cáqueza, Facatativá,
Gachetá, Girardot, La Palma, Leticia, Soacha, Fusagasugá, La Mesa, Villeta, Guaduas, Zipaquirá,
Chocontá, Pacho and Ubaté. The department is part of the electoral district of Cundinamarca.
4.2 Physiography:
The territory of the department of Cundinamarca has low, flat and mountainous reliefs, all
corresponding to the Eastern Cordillera on both flanks. In this context, four physiographic regions can
be distinguished in the department: the western flank, the Bogotá highlands, the eastern flank and the
plains foothills.
4.3 Hydrography
The hydrographic system of the department of Cundinamarca comprises two large river basins; to the
west, the Magdalena River, and to the east, the Meta River. A total of 11 sub-basins flow into these
basins. The Magdalena River receives the waters of the Bogotá, Negro, Sumapaz, Minero and Ubaté
rivers. The Meta River receives the Guavio, Negro, Humea, Guatiquía and Machetá rivers.
4.4 Climate
Due to its altimetric position, climatic conditions are influenced by atmospheric circulation, the
Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which determines the bimodal regime in most of the territory.
The southwest of the altiplano is the least rainy sector (600 mm) due to the sheltering effect of the
mountain ranges that frame the altiplano.
The highest rainfall is found in the foothills of the plains, at an altitude of 500 m, where rainfall is
above 5,000 mm. The rainiest months are March-April and October-November, interspersed with the
less rainy or dry months of January-February and July-August. Its lands are distributed in the warm,
temperate, cold and bioclimatic paramo thermal floors. The Chingaza National Natural Park is located
in the department of Cundinamarca and shares the Sumapaz National Natural Park with the
departments of Meta and Huila.
4.5 Economy
The agricultural sector is the main activity of the economic structure, followed by industry, services
and commerce. Within the great agricultural diversification of the department of Cundinamarca, the
transient crops of coffee, sugar cane, potatoes, corn, bananas, rice, flowers, barley, sorghum, wheat,
cotton, vegetables and fruit trees stand out for their economic relevance; poultry production is well
developed; it has a high degree of technification and is located mainly in the Cundinamarca highlands
and the terraces of Fusagasugá, Silvania, Arbeláez and San Bernardino.
The department's most important minerals are thermal coal, clays, limestone, dolomites, salt, marble,
gold, silver and emeralds; there are also copper and iron deposits. Most industrial activity and
production is located in the Cundinamarca highlands: dairy products in Sopó, Zipaquirá, Ubaté,
Facatativá; glass in Nemocón; leather and tanneries in Villapinzón, Chocontá, Mosquera, Cogua;
chemical industry in Soacha, Sibaté, Tocancipá, Zipaquirá, Madrid, Facatativá; textiles in Cajicá,
Facatativá, Tocancipá, Cota, Madrid, Soacha; paper and wood in Soacha and Cajicá.
Other industrial activities are located both in the highlands and in the surroundings of Girardot, such as
the food and beverage industry, construction materials, clothing; printing and publishing are in full
development mainly in the municipalities near the capital of the Republic. The most important
commercial centers are Girardot, Zipaquirá, Facatativá, Fusagasugá, Chía, Madrid, Soacha, Funza,
Mosquera, Villeta and Tocaima.
