“Product Design: A Review and Research Agenda for Management

Studies”
Davide Ravasi and Ileana Stigliani
September 22, 2018

This paper reviews research on product design in the broad domain of business studies. It
highlights established and emerging perspectives and lines of inquiry, and organizes them around
three core areas, corresponding to different stages of the design process (design activities, design
choices, design results). Avenues for further research at the intersection of these bodies of
research are identified and discussed, and the authors argue that management scholars possess
conceptual and methodological tools suited to enriching research on design and effectively
pursuing lines of investigation only partially addressed by other communities, such as the
construction and deployment of design capabilities, or the organizational and institutional
context of design activities.
The Critique
This critique provides an overview of research on product design in a wide range of fields of
business administration. Emphasizes new established perspectives and research directions, and
organizes them around three core areas that correspond to different phases of the design process
(design activities, design decisions, and design results). Pathways for further research at the
intersections of these research areas have been identified and discussed, and the authors have
shown that business scholars have enriched design research and effective research lines that have
only been partially addressed by other communities. Claims to have conceptual and
methodological tools that can be pursued. Building and using design skills, or the organizational
and institutional context of design activities.
These studies are management concepts to understand how product forms and functions are
defined in the design process and how they influence and affect social processes within and
around the organization. And emphasizes the potential contribution of the tool. Similar research
efforts are being strengthened in related fields such as marketing and new product development.
The design debate is complicated by the first problem raised by the word itself. "Design" has so
many levels of meaning that it can be confusing in itself. In other words, designs can be
recognized in different ways. As a result, the purpose to reach, as a process, as the purpose of the
process, and as (or) the ability. In fact, later in this article, I'll show you how different research
streams in business administration adopt different definitions that emphasize different aspects of
design. Consistent with the broad scope of our research, we propose a practical definition of
design as "what it is" and "what it does". Therefore, we understand design as a set of decisions
about the shape and function of objects and the activities that underpin those decisions. From this
point of view, the design is seen not only in terms of the final result, but also in terms of the
process leading to the result. Design results can include a variety of objects such as products,
visuals, environments, interactions, etc., but for the sake of simplicity, this article will focus
solely on product design research.
Three main areas of research to draw attention to their convergence in explaining the
fundamental stages of the design process, design activities (design management, design
practices, design tools), design decisions (innovation technological or stylistic) and design results
(financial performance) consumer response and operational efficiency)The review suggests how
the application of theories and methodologies from management and organization studies can
significantly enrich our understanding of design, either by enhancing new research directions
such as design-led and stylistic innovation, or by revitalizing established areas of research such
as design management, design and performance. . It provides a broad map of the different
product design research directions found in different areas of business administration,
highlighting their purpose, core principles and concepts, and outcomes. The author supported his
study by exploring the fundamental stages of the design process, namely design activities (how
design decisions are or should be made), design decisions (how design decisions affect formal
properties and functional aspects of the products) and the design results. (How the formal and
functional properties of products affect business performance). Like any other organizational
activity, design is performed within socio-cognitive premises that influence designers'
understanding of the appropriate way to design a product.
