How To Choose A Good Topic
1. Brainstorm for ideas
2. Read General Background Information
3. Ensure that the topic is manageable and that material is available
4. Make a list of key words
5. Be flexible
6. Define your topic as a focused research question
7. Research and read more about your topic
8. Formulate a thesis statement
9. Create a topic having cause and effect relationship
You need to Choose Broad Area and Narrow Area

Example
Human Resource Management (Broad Area)
• Recruitment and Selection
• Employee relationship Management (Narrow Areas)
• Health and Safety Management
• Compensation Management etc

Writing up an Abstract
An abstract is a concise summary of a larger project (a thesis, research report,
performance, service project, etc.) that concisely describes the content and scope
of the project and identifies the project’s objective, its methodology and its findings,
conclusions, or intended results.

Main Features of an Abstract

-Objective and Rationale
-Methods
-Results or Product
-Conclusion

Weak abstract:
Strategic Human Resource Management and the Australian Public Sector

The connection between human resources and performance in firms in the private sector is well documented. What is less
clear is whether the move towards managerialism that has taken place within the Australian public sector during the last
twenty years has brought with it some of the features of the relationships between Human Resource Management (HRM) and
performance experienced within the private sector. The research begins with a review of the literature. In particular the
conceptual thinking surrounding the connection between HRM and performance within private sector organizations is
explored. Issues of concern are the direction of the relationship between HRM and performance and definitional questions as
to the nature and level of HRM to be investigated and the measurement of performance. These conceptual issues are also
debated within the context of a public sector and particularly the Australian environment. An outcome of this task is the
specification of a set of appropriate parameters for a study of these linkages within Australian public sector organizations.
Notes:
This abstract is weak because it merely describes what the report covers (like a table of contents). It does not provide details
on the main results or conclusions. Check out the next sample.

Strong abstract:
Strategic human resource management (SHRM) enhances productivity and the effectiveness of organizations. Research shows
that when organizations employ such personnel practices as internal career ladders, formal training systems, results-oriented
performance appraisal, employment security, employee voice/participation, broadly defined jobs, and performance-based
compensation, they are more able to achieve their goals and objectives.
Using logistic regression analyses of data from a survey of North Carolina county social service professionals, this study
examines the extent to which strategic human resource management is perceived to affect outcome assessments (or perfor-
mance measurements) for welfare reform. While strategic human resource management practices are perceived to be present,
they clearly are not a predominant feature in North Carolina counties. The results of the logistic regression analyses indicate
an overall weak relationship between strategic human resource management and outcome assessments (accounting for fewer
than 3 percent of the explained variance in each model).

Notes:
1.The author summarizes the whole report here.
2.The author emphasizes: Main point/background, Results, and specific conclusions/recommendations.
This abstract is not better because it's longer; it's better because it's gives useful details.
Literature Survey
A literature review should help the researcher to identify and highlight the important variables that are related to the
problem.
The literature review needs to be done on the specific issues of concern to the researcher and the factors identified
during the interview process.
The first step in this process involves identifying the various published and unpublished materials that are avail-
able on the topics of interest, and gaining access to these.
The second step is gathering the relevant information either by going through the necessary materials in a li-
brary or by getting access to online sources.
The third step is writing up the literature review.
Sample Literature write up
Wang, Cheng and Chu (2013) conducted a research on the effect of
advertising appeal and effect in the relationship between celebrity
endorsement and consumer purchase intention from the
perspective of balance theory of Heider (1958). Uses quantitative
approach, they conducted a survey through questionnaire from
202 general consumers. This study found that celebrity
endorsement, advertising effect, and advertising appeal positively
influence purchase intention. Moreover, advertising appeal and
advertising effect partially mediate the relationship between
celebrity endorsement and purchase intention.
