The atoms are arranged orderly, and with the nuclei (+) surrounded by electrons (-)
orbiting the nuclei. The electrons that are shown are the valance or delocalised electrons.
This means the shown electrons are free to move. They orbit the nuclei and are held to
them by electrostatic forces, forming a ‘sea’ or ‘cloud’
Since the atoms are free to move from the nuclei, the atoms are often in the form of
positive ions, having lost their electrons.
Simply put, the attraction between the metal ions and the ‘sea’ of delocalised electrons is
known as metallic bonding.

It may be described as the sharing of free electrons among a lattice of positively charged

Metallic bonding accounts for many physical properties of metals, such as strength,
ductility, thermal and electrical resistivity and conductivity, opacity, and luster.

used?
Because metals are solid, the atoms are tightly packed in a regular arrangement.Because
they are so close to each other, the valence electrons tend to move away from their atoms.A
‘sea’ of free, delocalised electrons is formed surrounding a lattice of positively charged
metal ions. These ions are held by strong attractive forces to mobile electrons. This is called
metallic bonding.

5. Lustrous-They shine.
7. High density.
They are being used in everyday life and in industry.Basically they are everywhere.Due to
their properties(I mentioned above),they are ideal objects to be used in industry for
electricity cables, electronic devices, extraction and electrolysis productions and etc.On the
whole, they are involved in everything you can ever imagine-even in human body.(iron is for
transportion of oxygen in red blood cells throughout the body;Titanium for dental braces
and for people who have scoliosis.

Hello everyone.
The atoms in a metal are hled together by chemical bonds known as metallic bonds.
1.A metallic crystal can be visualized as an array of positive ions, with a common pool of
electrons to which all the metal atoms have contributed their outermost electrons. The
electrons in the pool have freedom to move through the crystal to any part and virtually in
any direction. They are known as free electrons .The attractive force between the positive

A metal atom consists of two parts, Valence Electrons and the remaining part called Kernel.
The kernel of metal atoms occupy the lattice sites while the space in between is occupied
by Valence Electrons .These electrons are not localised but our mobile.

I don’t fully agree with that statement, but I do believe that survey research is the best
option to get you started. It's great for testing concepts and gaining broad insights on a

In order to know what happens to the electrons in metallic bonding, let us consider metallic
bonding in sodium metal. Each atom has one electron in its outermost shell. An electron of
the outermost shell of one such atom will share space with neighborhood electrons of the
eight atoms (that are in contact with this central atom). This structure continues and the
outermost shells of all the atoms overlap to form a huge number of molecular orbitals.

Related How would you describe the practical application of a metallic bond
with an example?
Well, metallic bond is the bond between metals. It holds the metallic atoms.
The practical application or the characteristics of a metal is for the valence electron of the
metal. For that electron, metals are good conductors of heat and electricity. Again, metallic
bond is strong; requires great energy to be broken. That's why in room temperature, metals
are solid ( except Gallium) , also metals have higher Melting and Boiling Point.

Then you can ask about defining the bond ( I suspect you mean verifying the bond
strength). For that we have tensile test, peel test, shear test, thermal shock, salt fog
corrosion tests, and another hundred others.

Related What are the conditions for the formation of a metallic bond?
Metallic Bonding
Metallic bonding may be described as the sharing of free electrons among a lattice of
positively charged metal ions. The structure of metallic bonds is very different from that of
covalent and ionic bonds. In metallic bonds, the valence electrons from the s and p orbitals
of the interacting metal atoms delocalize. That is to say, instead of orbiting their respective
metal atoms, they form a “sea” of electrons that surrounds the positively charged atomic
nuclei of the interacting metal ions. The electrons then move freely throughout the space
between the atomic nuclei.
