a. What is the subject matter of the collage?

The subject matter in the collage is the dichotomy and differences of the global northern countries
and southern global countries. It has showed the opposites of the two different situations. It is the
illustrations about how these countries are going, and the state that they are in. These show the reality
of today and the bitter truth that the world is facing.

b. What are the things you see in the collage?

Seen in the collage are two men. One is greatly different from one another. One hold a basket full of
goods, while the other one’s basket aren’t full. The message of the collage is as simple as it is. It is that
there is a gap between these countries. That the others are going to have filled stomachs. While the
other’s has to be thankful of the little things they have.

c. What is going on in the collage?

The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Western European countries, and developing parts
of Asia are examples of global northern countries. These countries are made up of the world’s
wealthiest and most developed nations, which are largely situated in the northern hemisphere.
Meanwhile, Africa, India, China, Brazil, and Mexico are among the countries in the Global South that are
economically backward. While countries in the Global North are affluent, technologically advanced,
politically stable, and ageing as their economies approach zero population growth, countries in the
Global South are the polar opposite.

d. What is your realization after doing this activity?

This activity made me realize the difference between the two parts of the countries. I now knew that
there are still countries that are struggling for development. That there are some countries being left
behind by globalization. And other countries could not cope up with the fast developments of the
others. Every country does not have the capacity to go along with the economically rich nations. And
that had been a great difference of how its people live. IF certain problems may arise, like these global
pandemic, the ones who would struggle the most are the global southern countries.
 e. What is the possible title you will use in your collage?

I would like to entitle it “World’s Diversity”. For it has shown the prevailing diversity of the world. Of
how these countries are different from each other. It shows the reality that every countries have faced.
It opens up underlying issues that springs up from the diversity of the countries in the world. It may
seem simple, yet it causes a big difference as a whole. Even its individuality, for it affects great to those
countries who are struggling for development.

Analysis

1. In what ways did the global north-south divide?

Economic growth in the Global South is marked by low living standards and deprivations.
Furthermore, the Global South is characterized by low labor productivity. In comparison, to the Global
North, the South’s labor productivity is extremely low. On 2004, the world’s population was just over 6.4
billion people, with more than five-sixths of that amount living in the South and less than one-sixth in
the Global North. The Global South is dependent on and vulnerable to the Global North. There is an
unequal strength between the Global North and the Global South. The North’s superior strength is
manifested not only in its dominant power to dominate the pattern of international trade and the
agreements that govern it, but also in their ability to determine the terms by which technology, foreign
assistance, and private capital are shifted to the Global South.

2. What way or method do you recommend to resolve the gap/divide between the Global North
and the Global South?

In order to achieve international peace and stability, the Global North and South problem should be
given ample attention. Natural resource availability, various levels of health and education, the structure
of a country’s economy and manufacturing sectors, foreign trade policies, and access to capitals are all
factors that contribute to the inequalities of the two global countries. It even includes of how the
countries are governed, and the conflicts within and between both of the countries. In this regard, these
problems had been the underlying issues that somehow divide the countries. With it being said, both
countries shall seek for peace and unity. And to do so, it is better if the richer countries help those who
are poor. Since the Global South has been struggling in many aspects of its economy, help from the
Global North would be great.
