What is an Opinion Paragraph?

A paragraph in which you have to present your own point of view on a given topic. In such
paragraph, you must state your opinion clearly and support it with appropriate reasons and
examples. Your arguments must be really convincing. Your opinion paragraph must have a topic
sentence, body and conclusion.
1. Topic sentence: it shows the main idea of the paragraph. It tells the reader what the
paragraph will be about and also gives your opinion on the question. Topic sentence MUST
BE INCLUDED!
You can express your opinion using one of the following expressions;
 I believe/think/feel…
 In my opinion…
 From my point of view/As far as I am concerned…
 I completely/strongly agree/disagree…
Write a topic sentence for the following question:
“Do you think that, money brings happiness?”
Ex. I completely disagree that happiness can be bought for money and here are some of my
reasons why.

2. Body: the body of the paragraph ideally should have TWO/THREE REASONS and
SUPPORT for every reason. It is also important to use transitions signals before your
reasons. Below are written some examples of transitions signals;
 The first (second, third) reason is…
 To begin with…
 Another reason is…
 Also…
 Firstly (First), Secondly (Second), Thirdly (Third)…
 Moreover, Furthermore, In addition, Finally (Final reason), Lastly…
SUPPORT is very crucial for a high quality essay, so you better support your reasons with details
and examples.
Ex. The first REASON for the question and support details and example
Firstly, one of the main ingredients of being happy is finding TRUE LOVE for yourself, your
family and friends, which will be reciprocated and would not be traded therefore faded over the
time, such kind of love cannot be bought for insane amount of money because it has to be
earned over time, through support and acceptance, as well as trust. For instance, I am lucky to
say that I have such friends and family who are patient and loving to be always there for me even
when I am angry, happy or broke.
3. Conclusion: it is the final part of the paragraph which summarizes your entire work
and implies that your statement was correct supported with evidence mentioned above. (it
must be short, 2 sentences max).
These expressions can be used to show conclusion;

 In conclusion/To conclude
 In summary/to sum up
 In brief/ Shortly
 As a result/As I have said/As I have mentioned earlier
 All in all
In conclusion, I want to say that given all of the previous reasons before I think that true happiness
can be found through appreciation of basic concepts.

4. Connectors: These are very useful, especially for supporting your idea and they also
differentiate a high quality essay or paragraph from the average.
