TEAM ERGO
GENERAL:

Domestic violence is a major problem in our society with more and

more cases appearing daily.Especially, during the pandemic situation
and the quarantine, the confirmed cases of domestic violence increased
rapidly.

In Greece,a large percentage of 49% confirmed an incident of

domestic violence. The question is,what are the real consequences of
domestic violence and how do they affect a child’s well-being?
THE NUMBER OF WOMEN WHO HAVE REPORTED INCIDENTS
OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TO THE POLICE IN THE PERIOD 2012-
2017 SHOWS AN INCREASE OF 49%.
OF THE TOTAL OF 2,833 PERPETRATORS OF DOMESTIC
VIOLENCE IN 2017, FOR WHOM THERE IS INFORMATION ABOUT
THEIR GENDER, 84.5% ARE MEN AND 15.5% WOMEN.

In 2017 seven women were murdered in Greece by a member of their

family - in 2016 and 2018 the murders of women by a relative had risen to
13 in each year respectively.

The convictions of the Prosecution for domestic violence in 2016 they

were men at a rate of 92.8%, 93.4% for 2017 and 92.2% for 2018.
OF THE TOTAL OF 3,325 WOMEN WHO ADDRESSED IN 2018 ON
THE SOS LINE 15900, 88.8% OF THE CASES CONCERNED
INCIDENTS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

The most common form of violence comes from the spouse or sexual
partner. Women aged 15-44 are more at risk of rape or domestic violence
than of cancer, car accidents, war or malaria.
55% -95% OF VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DO NOT REPORT
THE PROBLEM.

The SOS line 15900, since its operation in March 2011 until today, has
received more than 37,000 calls. The requests of these calls concerned:
1,621 calls (41%) in psychosocial support

1,287 calls (33%) in legal counseling

274 calls (7%) in legal aid

281 calls (7%) in search of hospitality

22 calls (1%) in job search.

ACCORDING TO THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO),
CALLS FOR INCIDENTS OF DOMESTIC / INTRA-DOMESTIC
VIOLENCE INCREASED BY APPROXIMATELY 60% IN APRIL 2020
COMPARED TO 2019, IN SOME OF ITS MEMBER STATES. IN MAY
AND JUNE 2020, THE NUMBERS REMAINED EXTREMELY HIGH,
WITH 789 CALLS IN MAY AND 606 IN JUNE, INSTEAD OF 114
AND 83 RESPECTIVELY FOR THE SAME MONTHS OF 2019. IN
2020, 10 FEMALE HOMICIDES WERE RECORDED, 3 OF WHICH
DURING THE FIRST LOCKDOWN, AND 5 ATTEMPTED MURDERS.
FEMALE HOMICIDES ARE INCREASED RAPIDLY IN THE GREEK
SOCIETY, SHOCKING PEOPLE DAILY WITH DIFFERENT CASES.
CONSIDERING HOW IMPORTANT THE ISSUE IS, A LARGE
EXHIBITION OF THE VICTIMS’ CLOTHES AND ITEMS WAS OPEN
TO THE PUBLIC. SOME PHOTOS ARE SHOWN BELOW:
Helen Topaloudi: one of her outfits

shown in the exhibition

IN TRIBUTE TO THE WOMAN’S DAY, ADDRESSES AROUND THE
COUNTRY WERE REPLACED BY THE NAMES OF THE VICTIMS.
THIS ACTION WAS CONSIDERED TOUCHING AND WAS
WELCOMED BY THE CITIZENS, THINKING THAT THIS WAY WE
WILL HONOR THE LIVES LOST UNFAIRLY.
CHILD ABUSE:
Child abuse is an important public health issue because witnessing violence in the home
as a child is a strong risk factor for involvement in abusive relationships as an adult. In
addition, experiencing abuse as a child has been associated with other risk factors such
as depression, substance abuse, poor school performance, and high-risk sexual activity.
THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF CHILD ABUSE THAT VARY FROM VICTIM TO VICTIM.PHYSICAL INJURY
OR PSYCHOLOGICAL PAIN ARE THE MOST COMMON ONES.

SERIOUS PHYSICAL INJURY MEANS PHYSICAL INJURY THAT CREATES A SUBSTANTIAL RISK OF
DEATH, OR CAUSES SERIOUS AND PROLONGED DISFIGUREMENT, PROLONGED IMPAIRMENT OF
HEALTH, OR PROLONGED LOSS OR IMPAIRMENT OF THE FUNCTION OF ANY BODILY MEMBER OR
ORGAN.
RESULTS:

Children exposed to domestic violence may be the victims of co-occurring maltreatment.

In particular, domestic violence is a significant risk factor for verbal abuse, physical
punishment, and physical abuse of children. Although high rates of co-occurring
domestic violence and child maltreatment have been noted in the general population,
this co-occurrence has most commonly been investigated in clinical samples of abused
women and of physically abused children, with the majority of studies indicating rates of
co-occurrence ranging from 30% to 60%.

The impact that domestic violence has on a child’s welfare are truly significant. All
victims of child abuse suffer from high rates of anxiety, depression and adopt an
antisocial behavior. In addition,a large number of the victims attempt to commit suicide
or have suicidal thoughts.Children acquire a low self-esteem and are then unable to
trust others.
OTHER SEVERAL CONSEQUENCES HAVE TO DO WITH EMOTIONAL DETACHMENT,SLEEP
DISTURBANCES AND BAD ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE,LOW GRADES AND POOR SCHOOL ACTIVITY.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM FOR 30% TO 40% OF FAMILIES IN THE CHILD
WELFARE SYSTEM. BECAUSE CO-OCCURRING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND CHILD MALTREATMENT ARE
SO PREVALENT, MANY COMMUNITIES HAVE IMPLEMENTED POLICIES AND PRACTICES TO PROTECT
AND CHILDREN FROM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, AND TO PROVIDE SERVICES, ESPECIALLY AS THEY
RELATE TO INTERACTIONS WITH THE CHILD WELFARE SYSTEM. MANY OF THESE INITIATIVES HAVE
ARISEN OUT OF LOCAL ADVOCACY THROUGH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CENTERS AND SERVICES,
WHILE OTHERS COME FROM NATIONAL MOVEMENTS PROMULGATED BY THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF
JUVENILE AND FAMILY COURT JUDGES, SUCH AS ITS MODEL CODE OR ITS MORE RECENT POLICY
AND PRACTICE RECOMMENDATIONS, SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS THE GREENBOOK.

The exploitation of the
woman's body in
advertising
◦ Women's bodies are used to sell
everything from shampoo to chain
saws, and are often split into parts-
breasts, legs. Sometimes a woman's
body morphs into the product, so she
becomes the car, the shoe or the bottle
of beer.
◦ Some of the most dramatic images
belong to the fashion world, a range of
products, from alcohol to perfume,
have historically presented women as
objects of lust and desire. More and
more often, advertisements are moving
away from explicitly selling a product,
promoting an idealized lifestyle instead.
The mistreatment of people with
disabilities
◦ Abuse and neglect are constant
dangers for people with
developmental disabilities. In fact,
researches show that they are four to
ten times more likely to be abused
than their people without disabilities.
Compared to the general population,
people with disabilities are at greatest
risk of abuse. Abuse can take many
forms, ranging from physical and/or
sexual assaults to bullying and
emotional.
Child abuse
◦ Child abuse can occur into many forms such as
physical, emotional and even to the extent of sexual
abuse!
◦ Emotional abuse happens when parents caring for a
child judge, threaten, put down or reject kids ,
withholding love so the child feels bad about
themselves or worthless.
◦ Physical abuse can be harmful to a child's mental and
physical health as it occurs from a parents anger or
when an adult has had a significantly harmful amount
of drug or alcohol in their system.
Family violence
◦ Family violence is most often
thought of as occurring between
intimate partners or immediate
relations living in the same home.
◦ It is considered to be any form of
abuse, mistreatment or neglect
that a child or adult experiences
from a family member, or from
someone with whom they have
an intimate relationship with.
DOMESTIC
VIOLENECE
◦ Similarly with family violence, domestic
violence occurs between people close
to you such as your partner or even
friends.
◦ The main form of this are sexual,
phycological, physical and even
neglect.
◦ Domestic violence often occurs when
the abuser believes that they are
entitled to it, or that it is acceptable,
justified, or unlikely to be reported.

What is exploitation of woman’s body?

Women and their bodies have always been

commodities and sources of pleasure and exploitation
for patriarchal cultures. From the twentieth century, in
television, films, commercials, and music videos,
sexualization and objectification of women became an
increasingly growing trend. Mainstream media has
always used a false and unreal image of women’s
physical appearance, body image, behavioral
standards and beauty. Today, across television,
billboards, glossy pages of magazines, and social
media we can see hypersexualized and unrealistically
perfect female forms. Advertisements, music videos,
and films dehumanize girls and women and portray
