health implications faced by my mother when she had a bike accident during
which she sustained a leg fracture which was treated in a chemist shop by a
chemist who has little or no knowledge about leg injuries.
Due to the improper treatment of this injury, the leg was infected by a
bacterium which cause a disease called (Osteomyelitis).she was traumatised by
the painful effect of this disease. The leg was swollen and filled with pus. As of
that time, I was already a student of mass communication and I had little or no
idea about health education. So based on peoples advice, she was taken to
different traditional healers which worsen the disease. It was later that a
doctor friend of mine advised the family to take her to the hospital, which we
did and she had a surgery, induced by antibiotics and part of her heel which
was severely damaged was cut off. The feelings of my mother’s emotional
trauma energized my interest into studying health course so as to enable me
educate people in Nigeria on health matters.
I eventually got a bank job, and during my safety and medical orientation
induction, I volunteered to join the Emergency Welfare/Medical Team of the
bank. Through this position, together with a few other colleagues, we were
tasked with the responsibility of looking out for the health and welfare of
other workers and educate workers on the preventive measures of Covid 19. It
didn’t take long for me to realize my interest in health management, and
observing the amount of attention I give to other people’s health needs, I was
forced to have a rethink my future in the corporate environment.
Seeing that this program was designed to cater for students with and without a
prior academic background in public health, I believe the teaching method will
help me understand even the seemingly complex public health concepts.
Secondly, going through the program modules, the Robert Gordon University
offers modules that rightly speak to my interest including; assessing the health
need of populations, health protection and health Improvement, and social
perspectives on health.
