3. Understand the principles of structural dynamics and applications in assessment of wind
(hurricane) and earthquake (seismic) loads on structures.

CONTENT

 Matrix Structural Analysis; Stiffness and Flexibility Methods; Analysis of Beams, Trusses and
Frames. Local and Global displacements and forces.
 Plastic analysis of structures: principles of plastic theory and design: Plastic Analysis of beams and
Frames.
 Structural dynamics; General cases of disturbing force.
 Single Degree of Freedom (SDOF) systems, Continuous systems, Multiple Degree of Freedom
(MDOF) systems
 Flexural vibrations of beams and frames. Wind induced oscillations; Natural frequency, initial
conditions, damped vibrations.
 Analysis of wind and earthquake (seismic) loads.

METHOD OF TEACHING
The mode of delivery for this module will be virtual lectures with handouts and other material delivered
via Moodle through a combination of interactive lectures and tutorials/review sessions. For the current
semester the laboratory tests and field trips course work components will be substituted by assignments.
