How to write a good essay?

1. Paraphrase
Paraphrasing is a way of using different words and phrasing to present the same ideas.
Paraphrasing is used with short sections of text, such as phrases and sentences.

For example:

Uploading a video to YouTube can help exposure for your business.

Paraphrase:

Your business can be seen by many people if you post a video on YouTube.

If you look at the example and the paraphrased version, the words are different but the idea is the
same. You can change the exposure to seen by many people, or uploading to post. The idea is still the
same but you change the words.

2. Sentence structure
Sentence structure is how the basic grammatical elements (a subject, predicate, and sometimes
direct or indirect objects) of a sentence are put together.

The importance of sentence structure for your writing

As you write essays, it is necessary to have a good mix of sentences to make it interesting.

An unbroken series of simple sentences in an essay is simply unacceptable. Not only will it bore the
reader, but it will also reflect an immature style of writing. The writing will lack an aesthetic flow.

Using the simple sentence in an essay is an art. It is most effective when used occasionally to grab the
reader’s attention or to express the gist of an argument.

FOR EXAMPLE:

This research reveals that an active lifestyle can have a great impact for the good on the life expectancy
of the average person.

So in this sentence. It is using the SVO pattern or the SUBJECT VERB OBJECT PATTERN.

Subject = research

Verb = reveals

Object = that an active lifestyle can have a great impact for the good on the life expectancy of the
average person.
3. Concessions
Where one acknowledges a point made by one’s opponent. It allows for different opinions and
approaches toward an issue, indicating an understanding of what causes the actual debate or
controversy. It demonstrates that the writer is a mature thinker, and has considered the issue from all
angles.

Concession writing style also shows that the writer is a logical and fair-minded person, able to realize
that every argument has several sides to consider before it is presented. This type of writing can be
considered strong as it finds common ground between the writer and his opponent.

For example:

“I agree that many students act and lie about being sick, so that they can avoid school for whatever
reason. However, most students who do not come to school are actually sick. Being sick, they should be
focusing on getting better, not worrying about school and grades just because some students take
advantage of the absentee policy.”

This statement also shows the concession form of writing where the writer agrees that some students
do lie about being sick, and that the writer is able to understand this issue. At the same time, the writer
argues as to why students who are actually sick suffer because of those irresponsible students.
