Since awareness should be created from the root level & the main target is public community; so

financial incentives should be implemented in order to encourage waste reduction and recycling.
According to research, mass people do respond more if there is any financial impact. So, we have taken
some innovative strategies to spread mass awareness and encourage people to participate in waste
reduction campaign.

Steps:

1) Each house/building receives a detained bill for waste management fees. Payments are reduced
if residents follow Step 2. And if households fail to comply with it first receive warnings,
followed by a financial penalty.
2) Residential waste is source separated into five streams through a system of colored bins:
• Green bins: Wet waste
• Black or grey bins: Glass and metals
• Pink bins: Paper and cartons
• Orange bins: Plastics
• White bins: Non recyclables
*Hazardous waste, such as batteries and tube lights, should be separated.

3) The City Corporation will continue door-to-door collection of waste. Wet waste should be
collected from households every day, and dry waste twice a week.

4) Wet waste is composted at one of 96 decentralized compost units, whereas wet waste from
commercial establishments is treated using windrow composting at two bulk processing units, and it is
used for urban horticulture projects. In some cases, wet waste from hotels is digested onsite to produce
biogas.

Dry waste should be stored and a big portion of it will go to cement processing plant and the plastics
will be recycled by auctioning to the vendors once in a week.

*** Following this strategy we can achieve at least 70% of waste diversion.

Safety Measures:

Accordingly, there is a need to ensure the health and safety precautions of waste workers as they are
one of the most important sanitary barriers to keep cities and people safe from several diseases,
including COVID-19. They are:

 We will provide PPEs, masks, sanitizers to the workers and we will maintain Strict
adherence to enhanced hygiene norms, including frequent change and cleaning of PPE
and professional clothing; replacing professional gloves in the event of breakage or any
incident of potential contamination; sanitizing regularly facilities, vehicle cabins and
other equipment.
  We will give instructions to avoid contamination between workers in teams like strict
respect of the distance between people (>1m), limiting as few as possible workers in
the same area (control room, canteens, changing rooms) and all precautionary
measures helping at preserving health of workers in safe occupational conditions.
 We will provide sets of hand gloves so that direct contact (without gloves) with bins or
bags should be avoided in any case.
 We will supply sanitizers to encourage frequent hand-washing and increased cleaning
in workers’ facilities is a must.
 We will make sure that there are disinfectants and hand sanitizers available in each and
every vehicle.
 We will give proper instructions so that uniforms should be daily changed or cleaned -
cleaning of work clothes and shoes is minimizing the possibility of dispersing the virus
and limiting its transmission.
 Drivers and collectors should avoid contact with residents and employees from
serviced business.

To raise awareness among mass people and the workers related to it, we should:

 Make tvc s, publish posters and billboards, conduct field campaigns to raise awareness
to stop unplanned disposal of waste and encourage people to follow proper waste
management process.
 To raise awareness among the workers, we will collaborate with the labor union and
conduct campaigns so that the workers follow the law implemented by the authority.

DISPOSALS:

 After collection, the city’s dry waste is stored and aggregated at one of 15-20 sorting units.
 Then the waste is taken to two big plants where the wastes are separated.
 From one plant the wastes are supplied to cement factory, steel factory and brick field as fuel.
 And from the other plant the others wastes are taken to dumping sites for landfilling.
