customized machines. Most modern devices use microchips and processing
units to perform their basic functions.

Computer hardware is a collective term used to describe any of the physical

components of an analog or digital computer. The term hardware distinguishes the tangible
aspects of a computing device from software, which consists of written instructions that tell
physical components what to do.
Hardware refers to the physical elements of a computer. This is also sometimes called
the machinery or the equipment of the computer.

KEYBOARD

A keyboard is a portable wired or wireless electronic device that contains all the
alphabets, numbers, symbols, and special characters, which is used for entering data into a
laptop/ desktop computer system. QWERTY Keyboard Layout
Today, most keyboards are like each other, but may be missing one or more of the
sections (e.g., the keypad). Where keyboards begin to differ, the most is with their
constructions. Some keyboards are mechanical while others use membrane keys.

BASIC PARTS OF KEYBOARD

DIFFERENT TYPES OF KEYBOARD

Mechanical
Keyboard This is the primitive keyboard, and it
makes noise when each key is pressed. A
button is pushed down, and an electrical
signal is sent to the computer device
which then shows the characters.

Wireless
Keyboard Bluetooth, IR technology or Radio
Frequency is used to connect the
keyboard to the computer device.

Virtual This kind of keyboard is used in

Keyboard smartphone. This keyboard appears
when needed and disappears when
typing is completed. It is also available in
windows system that appears on the
screen. There is no physical object to
carry for a virtual keyboard.
USB
Keyboard Universal Serial Bus Keyboard has a USB
stick with a wire which must be inserted
into the USB port of the system.

Keyboard users who use both hands for typing. The
advantage of this keyboard is less muscle
strain and carpal tunnel syndrome for
users. The keyboard is built with the view
of ergonomics.
QWERTY The earlier typewriters had keys in the
keyboard range QWERTY due to the arrangement
of strings. Early computer keyboards were
also built in the same manner for the ease
of use for typewriter users. This is the
most common format used by keyboards.
Gaming It has very few keys specific for gamers.
Keyboard Graphics are also included in the
keyboard. W, S, D, A and arrow keys are
the only keys you could find in this

Chiclet
Keyboard In this keyboard the keys are square
shaped with rounded edges. Buttons are
attached with membranes of the switches
in the keyboard and this is used in most of
the devices now.
Membrane
Keyboard It uses pressure pads and have
characters printed on a flexible surface.

Thumb
Keyboard This is the smaller keyboard with fewer
keys or only numeric characters. These
are mostly used for arithmetic operations
and for gaming. The size of this keyboard
is just thumb-size.
Flexible
Keyboard It is made of silicone and the distance
between the keys are less. The keyboards
are meant for rolling and are not foldable.

Laptop Size This is designed especially for laptops.

Keyboard Most laptop keyboards do not have
numeric keypads and some functions are
incorporated with other keys on the
keyboard.

Backlit
Keyboard The keys have lights which help the users
to type even in the dark.

MOUSE
A computer mouse is a handheld hardware input device that controls a cursor in a
GUI (Graphical User Interface) and can move and select text, icons, files, and folders on your
computer. It was invented by Douglas Engelbart in 1963.

8
KINDS OF MOUSE
MOUSE NAME IMAGE DESCRIPTION
Mechanical Mouse The mechanical or ball mouse
is a refined version of
Engelbart’s original mouse
which had external wheels.
Instead of wheels, mechanical
mice have a metal or rubber
ball that can spin in any
direction. Two rollers keep
track of the ball’s movements
and convert the data into
electric signals for the display
cursor.
Optical Laser Mice
It detects the user’s
movements using the reflected
light of light-emitting diodes
(LEDs).

Wireless Mouse There are two types of wireless

mouse out on the market
today:
RF Mouse: It uses radio
frequency to send signals to
the receiving computer or
device.
Bluetooth Mouse: This type of
wireless mouse takes
advantage of the Bluetooth
protocol that most modern
computers have.
Vertical Mouse
Think shark’s fin – that is what
a vertical mouse looks like.
This mouse stands upright with
the primary buttons located at
the sides.

Track-ball Mouse A trackball mouse consists of a

large ball housed inside a
stationary unit. You need to
rotate the ball using your
fingers, thumb, or palm to
control the cursor on the
screen.
9
MOUSE NAME MOUSE NAME DESCRIPTION
Pen Mouse
A pen mouse is simple a
mouse housed in a pen form
factor.

Stylus Mouse The stylus is very similar to the

pen mouse in that they are
both held using a writing
position. The stylus, however,
is used directly on a touch
screen device or a pressure
sensitive pad.
Joystick Mouse A joystick mouse has a similar
form to the control device you
see in gaming consoles. You
use the thumb for clicking and
your palm for maneuvering a
stick.
Finger Mouse

A finger mouse is an optical or

Optical Finger Mouse trackball mouse that you wear
on your finger. They can be
wired via USB connection or
wireless via Bluetooth.

Trackball Finger Mouse

Gaming Mouse A gaming mouse is basically a

regular mouse on steroids. It
has added functionalities like
programmable buttons, faster
response times, improved
sensitivity, and adjustable
weight that make gaming and
high-intensity programming go
much smoother.

10
MOUSE NAME MOUSE NAME DESCRIPTION
TrackPoint It is also known as a pointing
stick. The TrackPoint is a small
rubberized button that can be
found on a laptop keyboard.
You can push it with your index
finger without changing your
typing position. The more
pressure you apply, the faster
the cursor will move.

HARD DRIVE
The hard disk drive is the main, and usually most substantial,
data storage hardware device in a computer. The operating system,
software titles, and most other files are stored in the hard disk drive.
A hard drive is usually the size of a paperback book, but much
heavier. Unlike volatile storage like RAM, a hard drive keeps a hold
of its data even when powered off.

MONITOR
A monitor is a piece of computer hardware that displays the video and graphics
information generated by a connected computer through the
computer's video card.
Monitors are like TVs but usually display information at a
much higher resolution. A monitor is sometimes referred to as a
screen, display, video display, video display terminal, video
display unit, or video screen.
Monitors are built-in as part of the computer in laptops,
tablets, netbooks, and all-in-one desktop machines. However,
you can buy one separately if you want to upgrade from your current monitor or configure a
multi-monitor setup.
Monitors come in two major types, LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and CRT Cathode Ray
Tube). CRT monitors, which are deep in size, look like old-fashioned TVs. LCD monitors are
much thinner, use less energy, and provide better graphics quality. OLED is another type of
monitor that is an improvement on LCD, providing even better color and viewing angles but
also requiring more power. LCD monitors have obsoleted CRT monitors due to their higher
quality, smaller footprint on a desk, and decreasing price of LCDs.

11
SYSTEM UNIT
The system unit, also known as a "tower" or "chassis," is the main
part of a desktop computer. It includes the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and
other components. The system unit also includes the case that houses the
internal components of the computer.
Some modern computers, such as the iMac, combine the system
unit and monitor into a single device. In this case, the monitor is part of
the system unit. While laptops also have built-in displays, they are not called system units,
since the term only refers to desktop computers.
