76. Direction: Read the given passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. Certain words are
printed in bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.

Reading aloud is an activity that we associate with the cosy comfort of children’s bedtime stories.
Certainly, children’s classics from The Gruffalo to the Alice books are produced knowing that when they
come to be read, the chances are that an older person will be reading them aloud to a younger one.

The extensive benefits of reading aloud to children are well documented. Researchers have found that
toddlers who are read to become children who are “more likely to enjoy strong relationships, sharper
focus, and greater emotional resilience and self-mastery”.
www.byjusexamprep.com

Unsurprisingly, then, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reading aloud to children. It is
even used by sociologists as one of the most important __________ of life prospects.

But if reading aloud is so good for us, why has it become primarily the preserve of childhood?

Of course, it was not always this way. As Meghan Cox Gurdon, the Wall Street Journal’s Children’s book
critic, points out, since the advent of the written word until the 10th century, “to read at all was to read
aloud”.

Even after silent reading became more common, it co-existed with what English Literature professor
Abigail Williams refers to as “communal” and “social” forms of reading well into the 19th century. Only
when the voices of mass media entered the home through radio and TV sets did reading as a shared
public activity between consenting adults specifically start to wane.

Children are not the only ones who benefit from being read to. But as books themselves reveal, reading
aloud could be more than merely sociable. It can be deeply seductive, forging intimate as well as
communal bonds.

63. D
Sol. Required percentage =

Hence, option D is correct.

64. B
Sol. Required Average no. of Male candidates
www.byjusexamprep.com

= = 40,550

Hence, option B is correct.

65. C
Sol. Required Difference = = 42300

Hence, option C is correct.

66. D
Sol. Female candidates in year:

Year 2008 = = 24,000

Year 2009 = = 25,000

Year 2010 = = 27,400

Year 2011 = = 14,100

Year 2012 = = 30,000

∴ Required year is 2012

Hence, option D is correct.

67. B
Sol. Number of Male candidates in year 2010 = = 41,100

Number of Female candidates in year 2012 = = 30,000

∴ Required percentage = = 37% more

Hence, option B is correct.

68. C
www.byjusexamprep.com

Sol. Required answer = 65000 + 68500 + 70500 = 204000

Hence, option C is correct.

69. B
Sol.
Speed of the boat upstream = = 16 km/h

Speed of the stream = 4 km/h

Speed of the boat in still water = 16 + 4 = 20 km/h

Speed of the boat downstream = 20 + 4 = 24 km/h

Time taken by boat to cover 120 km downstream = = 5 hours

Hence, option is correct.

70. B
Sol. Let total number of books in the library be 100x.

So, number of books of English = 0.26 × 100x = 26x

26x = 1170

⇒ x = 45

Required answer = 22 × 45 = 990

71. B
Sol. Let pipe A fills the tank in x hours.

Then, pipe B can fill the tank in (x + 5) hours

According to the question,

www.byjusexamprep.com

⇒ x² – 7x – 30 = 0

⇒ x² – 10x + 3x – 30 = 0

⇒ x(x – 10) + 3(x – 10) = 0

⇒ x = 10 and x = –3 (neglect)

Hence, B can fill the tank in (10 + 5) = 15 hours

72. D
Sol.
Using the data provided in the question, we get
Sum of the present ages of 8 family members excluding new member = (35 + 8) × 8 = 344
years
Sum of the present ages of the 9 family members including new member = (35 + 6) × 9 = 369
years
Present age of the new female member = 369 – 344 = 25 years
Age of the new female member at the time of her marriage = 25 – 3 = 22 years
Hence, option D is correct.

73. D
Sol. Let the present age of B be x years, then present age of A and C are (x – 4) and (x + 11) years
respectively.

⇒ x = 25

∴ Three year hence, the age of B = 25 + 3 = 28 years.

74. C
Sol. Let the cost price of the article be Rs. ‘X’
www.byjusexamprep.com

Selling price at 10% loss = 90% of X = Rs. 0.9X

Selling price at 20% profit = 120% of X = 1.2X

1.2X – 0.9X = 135

⇒ 0.3X = 135

⇒ X = Rs. 450

Cost price of the article = Rs. 450

75. C
Sol. Applying alligation:

Hence, the quantity of rice sells at a loss of 15% = × 147 = 105 kg

76. B
Sol. Reading the passage we see that it tries to state that reading aloud has innumerous benefits, besides that
we only follow this reading style only till we are kids and not when we are grownups. With growing age, we
tend to shift to silent reading. Through this line, the author tries to depict the irony and use sarcasm by
stating this statement in the passage.
77. B
Sol. As per these lines of the passage “The extensive benefits of reading aloud to children are well
documented. Researchers have found that toddlers who are read to become children who are “more likely
to enjoy strong relationships, sharper focus, and greater emotional resilience and self-mastery”…. It is
www.byjusexamprep.com

clear that A, C, D and E finds mention, but option B is not stated anywhere in the passage, it is surely the
answer to this.
78. D
Sol. Two books have been clearly mentioned in the passage in the first paragraph related to bed time stories
that children loved being read aloud. The second one is a journal and not a story book as per the
passage.
79. D
Sol. As per this line, ‘ Unsurprisingly, then, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reading aloud to
children. It is even used by sociologists as one of the most important indicators of life prospects’ it is
evident that A and B both recommend reading aloud for the kind of benefits it leads to.
80. C
Sol. Note that ‘ Wane’ means to to decrease in size, extent, or degree. Of the given options, the most apt fit
would be option C.
81. C
Sol. As the line mentions ‘one of the’ it is evident that the word has to be a noun word in its plural form. Of the
given alternatives only C,D and E fit the grammatical criteria. Of these, only option C makes a contextual
fit.
82. D
Sol. The blank needs to be filled with an adverb to qualify the following adjective ‘close-knit’,
meaning tightly united. This leaves option D as the only apt choice for the blank.
Crescendo: a gradual, steady increase in loudness or force.
Credibility: trustworthiness.

83. A
Sol. The word needs to be filled with a adjective that will maintain parallelism with the preceding
adjective ‘rural’, meaning rustic. The only word that meets the criteria is ‘urban’, which,
besides being an adjective, also helps to draw a contrast with ‘rural’ to denote the ‘change in
pace’ being discussed in the sentence. Thus, option A is the correct answer.
Arrear: something overdue in payment; a debt that remains unpaid.

84. C
Sol. The blank needs to be filled by an adjective to relate the subject (her) to the object (new
www.byjusexamprep.com

friends). As such, ‘attached’, meaning to like someone or something very much, in this case,
the new friends at the new school, fits the blank perfectly. Thus, option C is the correct answer.

85. A
Sol. The blank needs to be filled by a verb to denote the course of action taken by the subject. This
makes options A, B, and E valid for the blank. However, since the blank is preceded by ‘to’, it
needs to be filled by a verb in the base form to form an infinitive, thereby eliminating ‘spent’.
And ‘expend’, meaning to pay out or disburse, is contextually incorrect. Thus, option A,
‘spend’, in the correct answer.

86. B
Sol. In the context of the sentence, ‘inspection’, meaning evaluation, is the most appropriate word
for the blank. Thus, option B is the correct answer.
Insertion: to put something inside something else.
Insurgence: an act of rebellion; insurrection; revolt.
Insulation: segregation
Invasion: entering forcefully as an enemy.

87. C
Sol. Note the correct sequence is CBEAD. The sentences can be connected to form a story, which begins with
th scene of a coach. The ideal starter to it is C that mentions the location and the coach of which train. B
follows C. We see that C describes about the rush in the coaches and then B describes one of the
passengers of the coach who is a lady. Then owing to the influx of new passengers, two strange
handcuffed young men are described. So, E follows B forming a mandatory pair with A that describes the
second man in detail hinted by the presence of 'while'. Now comes D in the sequence as it starts with 'as
they' where the pronoun 'they' is used to identify the two men described above. So, CBEAD is the right
order.

Note the correct sequence is CBEAD. The sentences can be connected to form a story, which begins with

second man in detail hinted by the presence of 'while'. Now comes D in the sequence as it starts with 'as
they' where the pronoun 'they' is used to identify the two men described above. So, CBEAD is the right
order.

Thus, the first statement is sentence C.

88. B
Sol. Note the correct sequence is CBEAD. The sentences can be connected to form a story, which begins with
th scene of a coach. The ideal starter to it is C that mentions the location and the coach of which train. B
follows C. We see that C describes about the rush in the coaches and then B describes one of the

Thus, the second statement is sentence B.

89. E
Sol. Note the correct sequence is CBEAD. The sentences can be connected to form a story, which begins with
th scene of a coach. The ideal starter to it is C that mentions the location and the coach of which train. B
follows C. We see that C describes about the rush in the coaches and then B describes one of the

Thus, the third statement is sentence E.

90. D
Sol. Note the correct sequence is CBEAD. The sentences can be connected to form a story, which begins with

th scene of a coach. The ideal starter to it is C that mentions the location and the coach of which train. B
follows C. We see that C describes about the rush in the coaches and then B describes one of the

second man in detail hinted by the presence of 'while'. Now comes D in the sequence as it starts with 'as
they' where the pronoun 'they' is used to identify the two men described above. So, CBEAD is the right
order.

Thus, the fifth statement is sentence D.

91. A
Then owing to the influx of new passengers, two strange

second man in detail hinted by the presence of 'while'. Now comes D in the sequence as it starts with 'as
they' where the pronoun 'they' is used to identify the two men described above. So, CBEAD is the right
order.

Thus, the fourth statement is sentence A.

92. B
Sol. In the sentence, the emboldened word is required as a collective noun to denote a group of fish. Thus, the
common noun ‘schooling’ needs to be replaced by the collective noun, ‘school’, to make the sentence
contextually and grammatically correct.

Note: A group of fish or other marine mammals is called a school.

Thus, option B is the correct answer.

93. C
Sol. Note that after the adjective ‘detailed’ we need a noun, so it will be ‘shots’. As we are elaborating upon the
camera features, the ideal connector has to be ‘and’. Also, as we have the verb ‘shoots’ we need an
www.byjusexamprep.com

adverb to modify it so it has to be ‘really’ and not ‘real’ followed by ‘well’ and not ‘good’. It is so because
good is an adjective and well is an adverb. Good modifies a noun; something can be or seem good. Well
modifies a verb; an action can only be done well.
94. D
Sol. Note that the sentence uses the corelative conjunction ‘neither’ which should have ‘nor’ to ride the
sentence grammatically correct. Also note that using ‘adequate’ and ‘enough’ together would be a
redundant use of the similar words as ‘adequate’ itself means ‘sufficient/enough’. So, here we will use only
‘adequate’.
95. A
Sol. The error lies in the first part of the sentence. The sentence is in the past tense, and as such, ‘bite’ needs
to be in its past form, ‘bit’, to maintain the tone of the sentence.
Thus, option A is the correct answer.
96. A
Sol. The error is in the first part of the sentence. The have verb in the past tense, ‘had’, will be followed by the
past participle form of the verb, in this case ‘built’, to be grammatically correct.
Thus, option A is the correct answer.
97. D
Sol. The error lies in the fourth part of the sentence. To form past continuous tense, the be verb, ‘was’, needs
to be followed by the -ing form of the verb. Thus, to be grammatically correct, ‘was plan’ needs to be
replaced with ‘was planning’.
Thus, option D is the correct answer.
98. A
Sol. The error lies in the first part of the sentence. The adjective ‘haunting’, is contextually misplaced. It needs
to be replaced with the noun ‘haunt’, meaning a place often visited, to be contextually correct.
Thus, option A is the correct answer.
99. E
Sol. The sentence is contextually and grammatically correct. Thus, option E is the correct answer.
100. D
Sol. Th error lies in the fourth part of the sentence. The adverb ‘massively’ is contextually misplaced and fails
to qualify the following noun ‘crowds’. For it to be contextually correct, ‘massively’ needs to be replaced
with its adjective form ‘massive’.
Thus, option D is the correct answer.

As Meghan Cox Gurdon, the Wall Street Journal’s Children’s book
critic, points out, since the advent of the written word until the 10th century, “to read at all was to read
aloud”.

Even after silent reading became more common, it co-existed with what English Literature professor
www.byjusexamprep.com

Abigail Williams refers to as “communal” and “social” forms of reading well into the 19th century. Only
when the voices of mass media entered the home through radio and TV sets did reading as a shared
public activity between consenting adults specifically start to wane.

Children are not the only ones who benefit from being read to. But as books themselves reveal, reading
aloud could be more than merely sociable. It can be deeply seductive, forging intimate as well as
communal bonds.

Sol. Required answer = 65000 + 68500 + 70500 = 204000

Hence, option C is correct.

69. B
Sol. Speed of the boat upstream = = 16 km/h
www.byjusexamprep.com

Speed of the stream = 4 km/h

Speed of the boat in still water = 16 + 4 = 20 km/h

Speed of the boat downstream = 20 + 4 = 24 km/h

Time taken by boat to cover 120 km downstream = = 5 hours

Hence, option is correct.

70. B
Sol. Let total number of books in the library be 100x.

So, number of books of English = 0.26 × 100x = 26x

26x = 1170

⇒ x = 45

Required answer = 22 × 45 = 990

71. B
Sol. Let pipe A fills the tank in x hours.

Then, pipe B can fill the tank in (x + 5) hours

According to the question,

⇒ x² – 7x – 30 = 0

⇒ x² – 10x + 3x – 30 = 0

⇒ x(x – 10) + 3(x – 10) = 0

⇒ x = 10 and x = –3 (neglect)

Hence, B can fill the tank in (10 + 5) = 15 hours

72. D
Sol. Using the data provided in the question, we get

Sum of the present ages of 8 family members excluding new member = (35 + 8) × 8 = 344 years

Sum of the present ages of the 9 family members including new member = (35 + 6) × 9 = 369 years

Selling price at 10% loss = 90% of X = Rs. 0.9X

Selling price at 20% profit = 120% of X = 1.2X

1.2X – 0.9X = 135

⇒ 0.3X = 135

⇒ X = Rs. 450

Cost price of the article = Rs. 450

we only follow this reading style only till we are kids and not when we are grownups.
It is
clear that A, C, D and E finds mention, but option B is not stated anywhere in the passage, it is surely the
answer to this.
78. D
80. C

given alternatives only C,D and E fit the grammatical criteria.

84. C
Sol. The blank needs to be filled by an adjective to relate the subject (her) to the object (new

87. C
So, CBEAD is the right
order.

Also, as we have the verb ‘shoots’ we need an
adverb to modify it so it has to be ‘really’ and not ‘real’ followed by ‘well’ and not ‘good’.
