A. Establishing a Task 1: Share, Share, Share! Before we start our lesson

Purpose for the class, let us have a game first. This game is called Share,
Lesson Share, Share! The class will be grouped into four groups. I
already designated your group according to table.
Motivation In your first task, all you have to do is to brainstorm among
yourselves what word/words can you associate with having
a stand on an issue in the society. You are going to write
the word/words in the metacards. Once you are done with
your output, you are task to present the output in the
following:
Pro1 through cheering
Pro2 through rapping
Anti1 through singing
Anti2 through poem reading
(The presentation of outputs will them follow. The teacher will
facilitate the presentation of the outputs of the students. Then,
the teacher will process the answers.)

B. Presenting Task 2: Traffic Lights Game (5 minutes)

examples/ (The teacher will distribute flaglets for each
instances of the group. The flaglets contain red, green and
new lesson orange.) Class do you want another game?
Okay, this game is called Traffic Lights Game. I
Activity have her class flaglets colored red, orange and
green. Each of your group will be given a set.
What the group should do is that you will select
five members. Each member is tasked to give his
or her stand on the issues that will be flashed on
Analysis the screen. If the member agrees, he will raise
the green flaglet. If he does not agree, raise the
red one and if he is undecided, he will raise the
orange one.

Each representative should come forward and be

ready to defend his answer. I will randomly
select representative to defend their answer. You
are only given 30 seconds to answer. Am I
clear class?

Suggested propositions:
LIBRT: homeworks should be banned during
weekends.
LIBRT: cellphones should be banned in
elementary and secondary schools.
LIBRT: wearing of uniforms should not be
compulsory in public schools.
LIBRT: annual drug tests should be
administered to all SHS students.
LIBRT: flag ceremony should be conducted
everyday in schools.

C. Discussing new (The teacher will present various propositions to the class one at
concepts and a time. The students are given 10 seconds to decide whether or
practicing new not they agree on the given proposition. The teacher will ask at
skills #1 least 1 student from every color of the flaglet raised to justify
his/her stand, then allow the students to either stay or raise
another flaglet if they want to. Note that no one is allowed to
stay undecided at this point.)

Position Paper
Position paper is an essay that presents an opinion about an
issue, typically that of the author or another specified entity; such
as a political party. Position papers are published in academia, in
politics, in law and other domains. Like a debate, a position
paper presents one side of an arguable opinion about an issue.
The goal of a position paper is to convince the audience that your
opinion is valid and defensible. Ideas that you are considering
need to be carefully examined in choosing a topic, developing
your argument, and organizing your paper. It is very important to
ensure that you are addressing all sides of the issue and
presenting it in a manner that is easy for your audience to
understand. Your job is to take one side of the argument and
persuade your audience that you have well-founded knowledge of
the topic being presented. It is important to support your
argument with evidence to ensure the validity of your claims, as
well as to refute the counterclaims to show that you are well
informed about both sides.

D. Discussing new
concepts and

skills #2
E. Developing Task 3: What is their Position?
Mastery (Leads (The teacher will distribute a copy of position
to formative paper to each group. They will read on the
assessment 3) position each group group.) Class, still with your
group, you will read a position paper. I will be
giving each of the group a graphic organizer to
fill in based on the position paper you have read.
You are given only 5 minutes to do the task.
Assign a repertoire to present the output of the
students. Am I clear class?

1. Evaluate Task 4: Make an Infomercial
Learning (The teacher will let the students go to their
group. Two groups will be assigned to one
proposition: one for affirmative, and the other
for negative. Each group will create a persuasive
2-minute infomercial on their position on the
given debate propositions.) Class, now that you
already know how to cite the stand of the author
of the position paper, now you will make a
persuasive 2-minute infomercial on the
proposition assigned to your groups. You are
given only 10 minutes to create make and
practice for your presentation.
Your infomercial should:
give accurate facts;
convey your position clearly;
have a :catchy phrase” or slogan and use
appropriate language
use appropriate dialogue to help aid in
understanding of content.

Make sure that each member of the group

contributes to the output. Am I clear class?
Before you start crafting your output, please be
guided with the rubric which will be the basis of
scoring for your group’s output. Are there any
modification or suggestion that you want to have
with your rubrics?

Suggested propositions:

SAMPLE POSITION PAPER FOR THE CLASS
We honor God. We respect human life. We value our family. We love our children. These are the main reasons
why we, the People of God in the Diocese of Talibon, strongly oppose the passage of the Reproductive Health
Bill.
We believe that the RH Bill is not in consonance with the will of God. The sacrament of marriage, authored by
God, has two inseparable meanings, namely: the unitive – which serves the good of spouses; and the
procreative – which serves the good of the human race. These noble purposes of marriage are being
undermined by the RH Bill when it promotes artificial contraception, an act which holds couples from giving
themselves fully to each other and which aims to close the possibility of conceiving a new human life.

We believe that the RH Bill lacks respect for life. Human life is most sacred because it is made in the image and
likeness of God. We need to protect and care for it from the moment of conception up to its natural death. The
RH Bill claims to be for reproductive health. However, by promoting artificial contraception, it can be dangerous
not only to the health, but even to the life, of unborn babies. It can also be harmful to the physical and spiritual
well-being of men and women.

We believe that the RH Bill does not truly care for the family. The family is called the “Domestic Church”
because it is here that the love of God and neighbor can be taught and put into practice. By encouraging
artificial contraception, the RH Bill puts the family in a precarious situation. Studies have shown that countries
which promote artificial contraception consequently have higher incidence of adultery, divorce, premarital sex,
teenage pregnancy and abortion.

We believe that the RH Bill has little love for children. Children are gifts from God. We treasure them because
they give meaning to our Christian lives and inspire parents to work hard. The RH Bill considers children as
hindrance to development. It presumes that the Philippines would be better off if there are fewer mouths to
feed and fewer children to educate and to care for. It turns a blind eye on the fact that children can be our great
assets or treasure.
Instead of supporting the RH Bill, we humbly ask our countrymen, our leaders and lawmakers to:

1. Promote and practice Natural Family Planning (NFP). NFP is part of God’s wise design for human sexuality. It
is free, highly effective and has no side effects. Importantly, it encourages mutual respect, shared responsibility,
self-discipline and self-control, which are essential values for a permanent and happy marriage.
2. Defend the right to life of the unborn child. The baby inside the womb is the most powerless of all God’s
children. We need to secure its well-being by putting a strict ban on abortifacient contraceptives and a better
enforcement of the law against abortion.
3. Use government resources for poverty alleviation, not for contraception. Most of the coffers of the
government come from the hard-earned money of its people, majority of which are Catholics. It is therefore
proper to use such funds for life-giving projects that benefit the people, not those things which offend or harm
them.
4. Continue the hard fight against corruption, which is the main cause of our people’s poverty and misery. Bring
thieves to jail and oblige them to return stolen money to the government.

And so, we join the genuine voice of the Filipino nation as we say, “No to the RH Bill, Yes to God’s will.”
Position Paper of the Diocese of Talibon

We, the undersigned, officers, as well as past Presidents, of the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI),
recognize the current efforts of the Department of Education (DepED) to enhance basic education in the
country. We laud the DepED for using the K-12 program as a mechanism for long overdue changes in the basic
education curriculum. Concepts in Statistics are being proposed to be taught from Grades 1 to 8, and Grade 10,
culminating in the second-semester Grade 11 Math course in Statistics. We extol these efforts to improve
statistical literacy among Filipino learners, so that they can become effective citizens in this age of ICT and Big
Data.

On behalf of the country’s sole scientific society of individuals and institutions committed to the promotion of
the proper use of Statistics, we would like to call the attention of DepED to a few matters that will affect the
teaching of Statistics to our young:

(a) Statistics is not Math. While Statistics uses a lot of Math tools, Statistics deals with uncertainty as well as
inherent variability in data. These concepts of uncertainty and variability set Statistics apart from Math. In
consequence, teachers of College Statistics (typically Math teachers) have experienced many challenges owing
to difference in paradigms between Math and Statistics. Even in the current high school curriculum, Statistics is
supposed to be taught in the last quarter of third year high school, but typically, teachers may not do so owing
to their own difficulty understanding these topics. It is very likely that teachers of Grades 1-3, Grades 4-8 Math
teachers, and Grade 11 Math teachers who will be asked to teach Statistics throughout K-12 program, will face
similar, if not more, difficulties. These teachers (and moreso, our learners) cannot be expected to make the
linkages about the role of uncertainty and variability in the statistical problem-solving process. Students will
need not mere lectures but also, and more importantly, activities in learning Statistics concepts.

(b) Teacher training will be crucial. Training a select set of teachers for two weeks who, in turn, will teach a
cadre of Statistics teachers for another two weeks may not be sufficient given the challenge of learning the
discipline. The Philippines can learn from the wealth of experience, and current practices of various countries
such as the United States, Australia, Japan, Canada, Korea, Singapore in teaching Statistics in their respective K-
12 programs.

(c) The proposed second-semester Grade 11 Math course on Statistics containing concepts on probability,
sampling distribution, hypothesis testing, regression and correlation is predicated on Grade 12 students
requiring learning research methods. Hitherto, no country except the Philippines has a thesis or research in its
K-12 curriculum; hence no Statistics course has been specifically designed and placed (Grade 11 in the
Philippines case) as a prerequisite to research (Grade 12). The DepED may need to clarify whether the proposed
curriculum in K-12 is aimed at having all learners develop skills and competencies in the actual conduct of
research, or in the appreciation of research results.

This clarification may help in scoping the coverage of materials to be taught in the Grade 11 course.
We hope that the DepED will have a constructive engagement with the statistics community on its plans to
implement the proposed Statistics curriculum in K-12. In this regard, the PSAI will be having a panel discussion
on “Statistics in the K-12 Program” on the second day of the PSAI’s Annual Conference to be held this September
11-12, 2014 in Cebu City. We hope senior management of DepED can be part of this panel to provide reactions
to a short study conducted by some of the PSAI’s esteemed members. We also hope that DepED bureaus in
charge of curriculum development can likewise join this conference in the pursuit of making Statistics taught and
learned well in the K-12 program.
As of 2003, it was recorded that 4 out of 25 marriages in the Philippines end up in Legal Separation. Other
couples decide not to legalize their separation simply because they cannot afford it. This is one of the many
reasons why many politicians are pro divorce. Divorce is the legal dissolution of a marriage by court or other
competent bodies (Oxford, nd.). It is way cheaper than annulment and legal separation. Philippines is the only
country in the world that does not allow divorce because the Church is against it. All countries including
predominantly Catholic countries in the world like Spain, Poland, and Mexico permit divorce. Maybe the Church
there has opposed it, but the state has recognized the right of couples to choose the life they want (Wallace,
2013). The divorce bill has been languished in the Philippine Congress for 13 years. Although the Church is
against Divorce, it should still be legalized in the Philippines because it is beneficial to battered wives, couples
with unsuccessful marriages, and the children of separated couples.

Divorce is not yet legalized in the Philippines. However, legal separations and annulments are allowed here in
our country. In legal separation, the spouses are allowed to live separately but remain married to each other.
Legal separation may be granted when there is marital betrayal, homosexuality, repeated physical violence,
attempt on the life of the other spouse, and abandonment without reasonable cause for more than one year. In
annulments, the marriage can be voided but the couples are not allowed to re-marry. Annulments may be
granted when either of the couples can prove that the marriage was invalid from the start according to a certain
set of grounds such as impotence, homosexuality, mistaken identity, or psychological incapacity. Most of the
grounds are difficult to validate and require a lot of money to prove before the court. The proposed divorce law
does not require too much money and it allows couples to re-marry, with added protection, such as child
support, alimony and child custody. Ursua once stated that lack of divorce law in our country further
complicates the marital and family problems of many Filipinos. Therefore, it has to pass a divorce law now.

Divorce is beneficial to battered wives because in the Philippines, infidelity and physical abuse are not
grounds for annulment. According to the Philippine Commission on Women, “physical injuries and/or wife
battering remains to be the most prevalent case across the twelve-year period, from 1997–2009, accounting
nearly half (45.5 percent) of all reported violence against women (VAW) cases nationwide” (p. 147). For
instance, the marriage worked for 8 years, but later the husband becomes violent and unfaithful to his wife.
These may not be used for annulment under Article 36, unless it can be proved that these are manifestations of
psychological inability that preceded the marriage. The divorce law will provide a solution that Article 36 cannot
support. “A divorce law will provide a straightforward remedy to a marital failure for it does not concern itself
with validity or invalidity of a marriage and it terminates a marriage based on a ground that occurred during the
marriage” (Ursua, 2013).

Moreover, divorce law does not destroy a family. In fact, no law could actually destroy a family. It is only the
members of the family who can do that. Legalizing divorce law is accepting that some marriages work and some
do not. “In cases where a union is more harmful than beneficial, a divorce can be a benevolent and less hurtful
way of severing ties with your partner.” (Santos, 2011). Some marriages and families have survived to this day
and it will still survive after the divorce law has been passed. The Church should not interfere in the approval of
this law because we are a secular state. Thus, no religious group could dictate any law or policy for the whole
country. The law should only give people a choice, to be exercised according to their own personal beliefs.
(Wallace, 2013). Besides, there are also grounds to be considered when filing a divorce. A husband or wife
cannot file a divorce unless he or she has a valid reason.

The divorce bill is for couples that cannot bear to live with each other for some valid reasons. If the couple
truly loves each other, they will not be affected with the legalization of divorce. Therefore, the legalization of the
divorce bill will not destroy the relationship of happy and contented families.
People who are against divorce believe that it gives a wider path for immorality and marital infidelity. For me,
this statement is absurd because it is the choice of a man or woman to stay loyal to their spouse. Any law will
not affect a person’s faithfulness and truthfulness for his or her husband or wife. Again, if the couple truly loves
each other, they will not be affected with the legalization of divorce. Thus, the said proposed law will not affect
their fidelity and behavior towards their spouse.

Of all the reasons stated above, I can truly say that the divorce bill should be legalized in the Philippines as
soon as possible. It will not only benefit the people but it also makes everything legal: re-marriage, child
support and child custody, division of properties and debts. Divorce benefits battered wives, couples with
unhappy marriages, and children the children of separated couples. Therefore, it must be legalized in the
Philippines.
Death Penalty is a capital punishment. It is used today and was used during ancient times to punish people with
a variety of offenses. The bible also advocates death for murder and other crimes such as kidnapping and
stealing. Here in the Philippines, we used to have Death Penalty, but I believe this capital punishment should be
issued in all states for those people who commit great crimes. Death Penalty should be issued because death is
being feared, it gives Justice, it is a fact that there's no proof of an innocent being executed and there are
some quotations from the bible that seem to respond this.

Most people have a natural fear of death and I, myself, am afraid of it. Just think about it; if you die, you'll leave
this world and never come back. If we have Death Penalty and a murderer dies instantly, the homicide rate
would decrease because no one likes to die. Death Penalty is important because it could save the lives of
thousands of potential victims who are at stake.

Another one is that Death Penalty shows justice. There will be justice when we punish the guilty. It show
equality. On t.v., I have seen people being interviewed because one or some of their relatives died. They are
crying for help and wanting justice for the death of their loved ones. I know for sure that justice can only be the
solution for them to be relieved. A serious crime must have serious penalty and that is death. Justice can dignify
a person.

People who oppose death penalty claim that in the implementation of this capital punishment, innocent men
are wrongly executed. According to "ProDeathPenalty" , there has never been any proof of it. Moreover, our
criminal justice system takes extra precautions to be sure the innocent are protected. What's the use of the
judges who were trained in this field? They also want to make sure who is guilty and not.

Death Penalty is like "an eye for an eye". Death Penalty helps curtail future murderers and because of this we
can save more lives. If Death Penalty exists, repeat murderers are eliminated and future murders are deterred.
Just imagine it; we will live in a just society. If death Penalty wouldn't be issued now, then when? When there
are more criminals lurking? It is said that every minute, there is a chance that an innocent man could get
murdered. We must put a stop to it.
