RPM Test Administration

Test Administration

Ø Paper and pencil. There is also a computer-based version of the RPM.

Ø Individual or group administration can be done.

Ø The test is usually untimed but generally takes between 40-60 minutes. Time taken to answer the test is to be noted
down.

Ø Can be administered to individuals who do not speak English or who are hearing impaired. In this instance, it should
be administered individually or small group with a maximum of 5.

Ø You need to consult the manual carefully before administering the test.

Ø Each version of the RPM is administered by use of a booklet containing the version specific matrices.

Ø The subjects are given clear instructions on how to answer the test as well as practice item is given better
understanding.

Ø There are Easy Score Answer sheets on which the subjects have to write the answers.

Ø The test taker is required to conceptualize spatial design and numerical relationships ranging from simple/obvious
to complex and abstract.

Ø It requires form pattern completion to reasoning by analogy at levels from very simple to very complex.

Ø Each set becomes progressively more difficult.

Scoring

Ø The RPM produces a single raw score using score


keys.

Ø The total score is the total number of matrices


completed correctly.

Ø The RPM, thus, produces a single raw score that


can be converted to a percentile based on
normative data collected from various groups.

Interpretation
Classification of person according to the score he obtains:
GRADE PERCENTILES
GRADE I : INTELLECTUALLY SUPERIOR Scored at or above 95th percentile
GRADE II : ABOVE AVERAGE If score lies at the 75th percentile or above
GRADE II + If at between the 90th & 94th percentile
GRADE III : INTELLECTUALLY AVERAGE If score is between 25th and 75th percentile
GRADE III + If above 50th percentile
GRADE III - If it is below
GRADE IV : BELOW AVERAGE If score lies at or below the 25th
percentile.
GRADE IV - At or below the 10th percentile
GRADE V: INTELLECTUALLY IMPAIRED If a score lies at or below the 5th percentile

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

Ø RPM is very easy to administer.


Ø The test authors provide extensive norming, validation, and standardization data that facilitate
inferences drawn about examinees.
Ø The test includes excellent support documentation such as the technical manual and the administration
and scoring manual.
Ø Scores are relatively unaffected by linguistic and ethnic background.

Ø Scholars and clinicians often hold polarized views on suitability of RPM to determine cognitive abilities
in cross-cultural population.
Ø It doesn’t take into consideration one’s verbal ability and emotional intelligence.

Ø Can be given to hearing and speech impaired children as well as non-English speakers.

cognitive abilities in persons.
