The Gallic Rooster

The Gallic Rooster, also known as the coq gaulois, is a representation of the
French country and history, as well as its land and culture. The Gallic Rooster, like
Marianne of France and the lily, represents France and the French people, and it
frequently appears on government seals. The Gallic Rooster also portrays France in
global athletic events, serving as the mascot for most French sports teams or even
parading in the Olympic opening ceremonies.

For thousands of years, Roosters have contributed in many cultures' symbolism

and history. Numerous tend to associate the rooster with bravery and courage, since he
guards the flock against all comers, as well as virility. In France, roosters were popularly
used to design church bells and watchtowers because the rooster represents vigilance,
since he wakes up at dawn to warn people to the beginning of the day. During the
French Revolution, it was frequently depicted in art as a symbol of hope and faith, and
the Gallic Rooster featured on French currency long into the 1800s.

During the Second World War, the French resistance used this sign to remind
themselves of the French people's resilience and bravery, encouraging the French to
refuse occupation.
