LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Topic 1: Research Paper

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR THE LEARNERS (BIL)

Research paper is sharing your own original research with others or for reviewing
other’s research work. But, research paper is critical to the evolution of the modern
science where in, the work of one, builds upon of the others. To meet its goal, research
paper must aim to inform not to impress. They must be readable, which means, it must
be simple and concise. They must convince the readers that the material is important,
valid and reliable that other scientist may use it with the same field. They must include
the validity of the evidences to prove its outcome.

Writing a research paper is a method of communication. It is an attempt to tell

others about specific data that you have gathered and what you think those data mean to
your research.

IMRAD format is a structure of writing scientific research paper with four (4)
main sections: Introduction, Methodology, Results and Discussion.

Introduction explains how the research is important or necessary. Begin by

describing the problem or a situation, after which is the discussion of the current
situation/state of the research field. Then reveal the gap or problem then finally,
introduce how the present research is a solution to the problem.

The Methods section tells readers how you conducted the study. It includes
information about your population, sample, methods, and equipment. This part uses past
tense.

Result section of the scientific research presents the findings. This section is
written in past tense. Typically, results section presents the findings without
explanations or commentary on the findings. Make sure that tables and figures and
properly presented, labeled, and numbered separately. Captions go above tables and
beneath figures.

Discussion section summarizes your findings, comments on your findings and

connect them to other research. You also discuss limitations of your study, and use these
limitations as reasons to suggest additional, future research.
COMPETENCIES

MELC: a. Follow the IMRAD format in writing scientific paper

(SSP-RS9-WPR-IV-y-b-11)
b. Construct visual display (SSP-RS9-WPR-IV-c-12)
c. Present the research project in an exhibit/congress
(SSP-RS9-WPR-d-13)

In this module, learners should be able to:

a. Improve general research writing skills;

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

How to use this material?

You are provided with this Learning Activity Sheet (LAS) for your research subject,
an elective/add-on subject of the curriculum. Carefully read and understand the
instructions to successfully enjoy the objectives of this LAS.
1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions or directions indicated on
every activity of this LAS.
2. Write in your notebook or any writing pad the concepts about the lessons.
3. Perform all the provided activities in this LAS.
4. Let your parent/guardian and your teacher-facilitator assist you in your
learning.
5. Let your parent/guardian and your teacher-facilitator assess your outputs.
6. After the completion of the required task, the submission of your output
may either be through online or drop off point per municipality (depending
on the chosen mode of learnings at all times.
LESSON 1

Scientific research demands precision. In research writing, you are presenting

your ideas in response to the information you found in different sources. As you gather
information and data, your knowledge about the topic will draw you to make your
original judgment and interpretation.

The research paper contains different parts and follows the Introduction,
Methodology, Results and Discussion (IMRAD) format. This format is different from the
traditional format used in writing research paper. The differences between the parts of
IMRAD and traditional paper proposal is shown below.
ACTIVITY #1. FINALIZING COMPLETE PAPER
WHAT SHALL YOU LEARN FROM THE ACTIVITY?
Finalize research paper using the checklist.

Directions: COMPLETE THE PARTS OF YOUR RESEARCH PAPER.

A) Submit the complete parts of your paper. Use the checked revised paper from
introduction to abstract. B) Fix the arrangement of the parts of your paper by
following the format of a complete research paper (IMRAD)
C) Update your Table of Contents. Make it sure that the indicated pages match the
page of ALL parts of the paper.
D) Use the checklist as your guide in completing your paper.
E) Use the extra bond paper in writing the content of your study. If you have
available printer, you may use your laptop to print your copy. Attach the printed
/written output in this activity sheet for checking.
