KINETIC MOLECULAR THEORY Simulation lab

1. Open the link https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/states-of-matter-basics/latest/

states-ofmatter-basics_en.html. This can be open using your cellular phones or even a
laptop.
2. Your screen must look like this:

3. Click the “States” button. To start with the simulation activity

4. Your simulation lab must

look like this:
5. Select “Water”. Then click
“Solid” buttons.

6. Observe the water molecule

in a solid state of matter. What do you observe with the molecules? Change the state of water
into liquid and gas. What do you observe with liquid and gas state of water?
7. Restore to default atom which

● In the solid state of water, the researchers observed that the water molecules
are compressing to each other like they don’t want to have space between
them. They also have defined shape.
● In the liquid state of water, the researchers observed that the water molecules
are shaking in different direction just like dancing in its place and all of them
are forming undefined shape. Means no exact shape.
● In the gas state of water, the researchers observed that the water molecules
are moving and shaking in any direction and some of them are bumping to
each other. All of them are floating in any direction.

is “neon”. Observe its atom at solid state. Now, try to turn the heat by dragging the button
up. Observe what happens to the solid phase of neon atoms. What happens as you turn the
heat up?
- At first, the neon molecules in solid state are moving less and forming a defined shape
just like a compressed shape but when we turn the heat up it started to separate to each
other and move in any direction. They are floating with no shape.

8. Now, try to decrease the temperature by dragging the button down. Look closely
to the atom. What happens as the temperature decreases?
- It is starting to go back to its normal form which is defined shape and the molecules
are limited to its movement and compressing to each other. In other words, the
molecules are leaving no space between them.

9. Answer the following:

a. How can you relate the motion of the particle to the temperature?
- As the temperature increases, the motion of the molecules or particles are also
increasing. If the temperature decreases, the movement or the motion of molecules will
become limited unlike if the temperature increases. In other words, the movements of
particles depend on the temperature.
b. Explain how this phenomenon you observed in this simulation lab to the KMT. Expound
clearly.

- It is exactly supporting the idea of KMT or Kinetic Molecular Theory which states that
gas particles are in constant motion and exhibit perfectly elastic collisions. It is exactly
related to the phenomenon. The researchers observed in simulation lab which are the
molecules movement is affected by the temperature changes.
