Ban on Single-use plastic

19 July March 2022

By Staff reporter

Single-use plastic means those plastic items which are used once , or for a short period of time,
before being thrown away. We all make use of such items in our daily life in the form of ear
buds, cutlery, plates, straws and balloons and sticks for balloons, cups, plastic bags, soda and
water bottles and food packaging items etc.

Its impact on the environment and human health is devastating. It is one of the most prevalent
causes of environmental as well as water pollution. Most of the single use plastic items thrown
anywhere, goes into a landfill or water bodies by various means. They break down into small
particles but do not decompose and remain in the soil and water for more than hundred years,
releasing toxic chemicals and thus damaging our environment. In the water bodies, aquatic
animals consume plastic particles along with their food, which blocks the digestive systems
resulting in serious health problems and death.
The Smoke released from burning plastic increase the risk of heart disease and aggravates
respiratory ailments, nausea or headaches, and damages the nervous systems.
Worldwide 300 millions tons of plastic is produced each year, most of which cannot be
recycled. They are non-biodegradable and therefore, a biggest threat to nature , vis-à-vis
existence of mankind on earth.
Indian Government has recently has recently launched a campaign to end the use of single-
use plastic in the country. It has laid out a multi-ministerial plan to discourage the use of single
use plastics across the country to free India of single use plastics by 2022.
Repercussions of ban on single – use plastic was such that many small industries involved in its
production are shut down, people turned jobless. Still there are some who are violating the
laws. Those violating the laws can be penalised under the Environment Protection Act 1986 –
which allows for imprisonment up to 5 years, or a penalty up to Rs 1 lakh, or both.
The role of public towards nature, planet and all living creatures is to stop using single use
plastic, use environment friendly products which can be recycled and reused, to protect our
environment .
