CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Plastics has a big contribution to our daily lives in consuming products but it

has one of the biggest negative contributions to our mother earth through pollution.

Like many rapidly developing countries, the Philippines grapples with unsustainable

plastic production/consumption and the insufficient solid waste management

structure. According to (www.worldbank.org) a staggering 2.7 million tons of plastics

waste are generated in the Philippines each year, and an estimated 20 percent ends

up into the ocean.

We decided to produce bioplastics. These contains cassava starch,

vegetable oil, and organic resins. It is compostable, breaking down over a period of

months on land or sea however, it dissolves instantly in hot water. These will also

help to prevent endangered species in the ocean from total extinction, and limit the

carbon dioxide that is produce from burning plastics that is making hole in the ozone

layer and making our atmosphere hotter.

We spent a lot of money in cleaning every canal, streets and creeks to

prevent flood because of plastics that is bocking the flow of waters. And I think

developing plastics that is easy to decompose will help our community to get rid of

every flood that getting often even without storm or typhoon.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

How can this project revolutionize the way we see plastics and how can it help to

reduce pollution?

1. What are the difference between plastics and bioplastics?

2. Who will benefit from bioplastics?

3. What are the effects of bioplastics in our community?

4. How can bioplastics reduce the pollution?

5. Is it effective in our community?

6. How does bioplastics help our biodiversity?

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study/project proposal aims and focuses on how can we help our

community environmentally and economically by starting to solve big problems in

simple way by applying our modern knowledge with the help of chemistry and

technology.

We will also determine the effect of plastics statically, like the number of tons

of plastics and how long it can be produces in our country and community. And the

effects of it to our health and the habitant of different species in our biodiversity

especially the endangered ones. We want to innovate our community and aims for a

better life. And as a S.T.E.M student from grade 12 we want to prove that we can

change world by hard works and determination.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research would be beneficial to everybody and to our mother earth. In

this study we will know how to make our future bright for our next generations. It

simply gives us idea how to start and make a change. This project/study helps our

nature and community. Just like recycling and reducing carbon dioxide emission, this

will contribute in protecting ecosystems and wildlife, conserves natural resources,

and fight climate change. It will enlighten us in how we value others not just bringing

justice to people but for every species and living things that is being highly affected

by the foolishness and greed of us human beings. Ices in the Antarctic are melting

due to global warming and the sea level is getting high every year and we are all

affected all over the planet. And without the will to start and make a change and

being selfish will make the situation of our earth getting worse and will make our next

generations to suffer. Hopefully bioplastics will be more improve in the future and

make a big change all over the world.
