Substance
pH: A measure of how acidic or alkaline a substance is.
The initials pH are short for Potential of hydrogen.
Acids have a pH value less than 7. pH ˂ 7
If the pH value is 7, it is neutral pH = 7
Alkalis have pH values greater than 7. pH ˃ 7
Acidic: Alkaline:
A substance with a sour A strong base, with a bitter
taste that will react with taste that will reacts with
a base to form a salt. an acid to form a salt.
Strong acids can burn Strong alkalis can burn
skin. skin.
Acids (pH ˂ 7 ):
Lemon juice, vinegar, ant stings and many others are natural acids, they sting on
skin and taste sourly. There are also stronger acids we use in our daily life,
hydrochloric acid is one of them, a strong acid used in construction work.
Alkalis (pH ˃ 7):
Soap, window cleaner, and green tea are all bases. They are soapy to the touch
and taste bitterly. There are also stronger bases we use in our daily life, like
sodium hydroxide, a strong base used as a drain cleaner.
pH(Potential of hydrogen):
pH is a number we use to know if a substance is an acid(pH ˂ 7 ), Neutral (pH = 7)
or alkaline (pH ˃ 7).
We use pH test paper or solutions like Bromothymol blue to understand this.
