The grade 5 English science unit, Living things,
meets the academic content standards set in the
Korean curriculum, which state students should:

A. Understand what an ecosystem and how to

observe them.
B. What is Photosynthesis and how does a plant
survive.
C. How living things adapt to their environment.
D. How we can we help the environment.
E. Be able to differentiate between different
organisms.
F. Understand and perceive Fungi and its
growth.
G. Be able to experiment and observe the
growth of bacteria in a closed environment
H. Be able to model and explain the size and
form of bacteria and viruses.

Adaption:
Adaption is when an organism changes over time to better live in its habitat. There
are many examples of this. for example, different kinds of foxes, in the world.
We have desert foxes(Fennec), Artic foxes and forest foxes. They all had a common
ancestor, and by evolution slowly changed to the foxes we know today. This did not
happen in one day, but over 1000’s of years. We can see the same in many kinds of
organisms, like birds, mammals and plants.
Habitat: Diet:
Tundra Salt water Grassland Herbivore: Eats plants
Desert Fresh water Mountain Carnivore: Eats meat
Forest Cities Rainforest Omnivore: Eats plants and meat

Adaption:
Adaption is the gradual change of a species through what is called Survival of
the fittest. This means that the individual that is the most fit in its environment
will eat more, live longer and have more children, will survive. This is how we
now believe that different kinds of the same species have come to live on Earth.
Think about how your organisms have changed to survive on the new planet.

Change your organisms to better live on another planet:

Your drawings needs to describe:
1. What planet are your organisms on?
2. What is the planets habitat?
3. How did your organisms adapt?

Ecosystem:
There are many kinds of ecosystems. There are tundra, desert, freshwater, grasslands,
forest and marine ecosystems. All of them are different and will have different organisms
in the ecosystem. We understand ecosystems through either a food pyramid or a food
web. These tools are used to understand who eats who and how the energy is spread.
Food Pyramid: Food web:
A food pyramid tells us how energy moves A food web is used to understand who eats
in an ecosystem, who is the primary who and where the energy goes. The food
producer, primary, secondary and tertiary web is used more to understand the animals
consumer. in the ecosystem.

We as humans have done many good things for ourselves. We have built
apartments and buildings so big we can house more people than we thought
possible. We have built cars, trains and airplanes that allows us to move nearly
everywhere in the world. We have made technology that allows us to see and do
things that have improved our lives for the better.
All these things have a price, and we are living with that price every day.

To make fuel for the cars and airplanes we must dig it up from the ocean or the
earth. To get electricity we need to burn oil and create gases that are bad for the
environment.

To build houses we need to remove forests and habitats where animals live.
We have created many wonderful things, but the price have been animals and
their environment.
