4 The Bodyguard
NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
The Bodyguard is an iconic 1992 movie about a world-famous actress and
singer, Rachel Marron, who needs protection from an unknown stalker, so her
team enlists the help of a Bodyguard. Even more iconic than the movie is its
soundtrack, which features hit songs performed by the movie’s leading lady, the
incomparable Whitney Houston. The musical brings the story to the present
day and adds some more Whitney favorites like “So Emotional”, “How Will I Know?”, and “I Wanna
Dance With Somebody.”
The Bodyguard is a modern jukebox musical and homage to Whitney Houston and should feel like a
thrilling ride, interspersed with music videos of your favorite songs. But when you begin to delve into
the story of Rachel Marron, you learn that at its heart, The Bodyguard is the story of a mother, trying
to protect her child, and herself from the harm the world can do.
While preparing to direct this iteration of The Bodyguard, I began to think about what kind of armor
we put on each day to protect ourselves from the world, and the things that could hurt us. We all
wear armor. Every day. And depending on who you are, and what you’ve experienced, you may wear
more or less.
Superficially, The Bodyguard is about a woman needing protection from a man. But in reality, it is the
story of a mother learning to trust someone enough that she can begin to slough off her armor and
break down her walls, with a lot of dancing and singing on the way.
Enjoy!
SPECIAL THANKS
