DANCE

Dancing is very popular in the Philippines. It is a way to bond and share our talents with
the rest of the community. Popular European dances that we have adapted to our own
were the pandango, the polka, and the ballroom dance which can still be seen
performed in debuts. Through the Americans, the Philippines was exposed to the Afro-
Cuban dance forms such as the tango, samba, mambo, and cha-cha.

THE CONTEMPORARY DANCE FORMS

 Aerobic dance – is a dance routine made into an exercise program. Formal

aerobic dance class has three phases; the warm up, aerobic dance, cool down
exercise.

Examples: Jazzercise, aero hip-hop, ballroom, Belly and more Brazilian

developed Zumba.

1
Some benefits of doing aerobic exercise:

 Increases stamina – it fills a person with energy and boost the body
 Weight loss- a person can burn a lot of fat and calories
 Increases artery health- keep the arteries clear and blood vessels healthy
 Reduce stress and anxiety- reduces stress and uplift the mood of a person

 Ballet – is both a dance and theater art. It is a style and dance technique that
follow strict set of moves and performance. It originated from the European court
spectacles and was later brought to the Philippines by the American.

- Choreographers continue to make different styles of ballets. Ballet

companies are giving the dance audiences a wide range of experiences in the
theater.

Styles of ballet:

 Ballon technique, the ballet dancer appears lightfooted while jumping

and looks lightweight like defying gravity.
 Bravura, the showy style with a lot of elaborate steps put together in
sequence
 Piroutte, a non-traveling turn on one leg and consists of one or more
rotations
 Pointe technique- Dancing on the tips of complete extended feet in
pointe shoes.
 Split, the legs are extended in opposite directions.
 Plie- With the body held upright, the knees are continuously bent
outwards.
 Grand jete is a long horizontal jump starting from one leg and landing on
the other leg.
 Assemble is a jump that lands on two feet.
 Fouette is a move where a quick pivot on the supporting leg changes the
orientation of the body and the working leg.
 Port de bras technique , moving arms gracefully to different positions.
 Alignment technique, keeping the head, shoulders and hips vertically
aligned.
 Cambre technique, bend the body from the waist forward, backward, to
the side or circular and bringing back to the center.
 Arabesque position, the ballet dancer stands on one supporting leg held
straight, and another leg is turned out and extended behind the body held
straight

There are different ballet forms: modern ballet, opera ballet and folkloric ballet.

 Folk Dance – is the different dances performed by various cultural groups

throughout the country. It is performed during rituals, festivals, fiestas and other
community celebrations. Mimetic dances also represent movements that copy

communal activities such as planting rice and harvesting.

Examples are the mananagat of Cebu – which imitates the movements of a

fisherman and the Pangasinense’s Tanobong – which mimics the steps in making a
broom.

These traditional dances have been used by the ethnic groups to celebrate their
identity and are based on their literature, legend and beliefs.

2
Example: Tinikling of Waray – which considered as the Philippines national dance
and the Sulbi of Batangas. some folkdances are integral to festival such as the Ati-
Atihan of Aklan, the Masskara of Bacolod, and Sinulog of Cebu.

 Street Dance – it is a term used to describe vernacular dances or dances that

developed organically within a community. It is a dance form began in urban
open spaces, such as parks, streets, yards and night clubs. Early forms of street
dance gained popularity during the late 1970s. it became more common in the
Philippines in the 1980s.
