Good day Seniors! It is nice to be with you today. Since we are now in the “new
normal” it is very important for you to study your lessons in or out of the school. Self-
paced learning through this Self-Learning Kit is needed as a supplementary activity
and tool to increase your knowledge towards the different lesson to be undertaken in
the subject, Health Optimizing Physical Education III. In this SLK, you will be
discover the fundamental steps of modern and contemporary dances.
Read and understand this SLK. Answer all the given activities and assessments in
order to measure your understanding in your lesson. The answer keys are at the
back but be honest in answering your assessments and activities first before
checking at the answer keys. After you completed all your activities, submit this SLK
to your subject teacher for checking. Remember to read the instruction before doing
each activity and assessment as part of the module. Use intended papers in
answering the different activities and assessments. Please DO NOT WRITE

Contemporary Dance
During the 19th century, theatrical dance performance was synonymous with ballet.
Ballet is a formal technique that developed from court dance during the Italian
Renaissance and became popular.
Around the end of the 19th century, several dancers began to break the ballet mild.
All of whom developed unique styles of movement based on theories of their own. All
focused less on formal techniques, and more on emotional and physical expression.
During the mid of 1940’s, Merce Cunningham began exploring his own form of
dance. He introduced the concept that dance movements could be random and that
each performance could be unique. Because of his complete break with formal
dance techniques, is often referred to as the father of the contemporary dance.
1. Grounded movement
2. Appreciation of the body and its natural movement
3. Themes or motifs in movement
4. Facial expression while dancing other than smiling
5. Interesting, different movement that does not fall into other dance categories.
6. Accents in movements (sudden or even sharp movements in the midst of
slow, smooth movement)

8. A basis in techniques but a focus on execution and “feeling” the movement.

1. Theme-It conveys the message of the dance.
2. Design-pattern of movements in time and space.
3. Movement- the bodily actions of the dancers that include his steps.
4. Technique- the skill of movement executed by the dancer.
5. Music- the auditory background to which a dancer moves.
6. Costume and body paraphernalia-properties worn by the dancer that help
reflect the message, customs and beliefs.
7. Choreography- the figures and steps in dancing that enable the dancers to
perform in an organized manner.
8. Scenery-the background or setting where the dance is performed to make it
more realistic and enriching.
The purpose of contemporary is to let the dancer express his or her inner emotions
to the audience. The dancer tells a story to the audience, that is generally sad or
depressing in hopes of making them an emotion.
1. Turns
A. Parallel Pirouettes- A parallel turn on the toe or ball of one foot in ballet.
B. Ballet Pirouettes- a rapid whirling about of the body especially : a full turn
on the toe or ball of one foot in ballet
C. A la seconde turn- a classical ballet term meaning a “spin with leg to the
side” or “spin with leg in second position.” A dancing performing a pirouette a la
seconde will be turning on their supporting leg with their other leg to the side and
straight with a pointed foot.
D.Fouettes-a quick whipping movement of the raised leg in ballet usually
accompanying a pirouette
2. Jumps
A.Petit Allegro- small jumps
B.Grande Allegro- big jumps
Example of Petit Allegro
Saute- a jump off both feet, landing in the same position.
Echappe- a ballet movement in which the dancer jumps from the fifth
position and lands on the toes or the balls of the feet in the second
position.
Soubresaut- a straight-legged jump from both feet with the toes pointed
and feet together, one behind the other.
Jete- a jump in which a dancer springs from one foot to land on the
other with one leg extended outward from the body while in the air

Tells story
Includes characterization, tempo, dynamics, gestures, music and mode,
emotions.
A. Characterization

B. Tempo- it pertains to speed, how fast or slow the movements
C. Dynamics- it is a degree of muscular energy expanded by the body in the
execution of a particular movement.
D. Gestures- these are movements that are commonly used by people in place
of ordinary words.

E. Music and Sound- accompanies the dance drama and adds to the overall
tone and mood of the dance.
F. Costumes- should aim for simplicity and must not interfere with movements.

Johakyu- a Japanese term which means beginning, middle and end. In dance
drama there should always a start, highlights and regression on the story of
the dance.
Philippine Dance Events and Competitions
It is undeniable that Filipinos are the best dancers in the world. As part of our culture
and tradition, dance has been developed from the pre-colonial period up to this time.
As part of the Philippine education curriculum, dances is taught which aims to hone
the natural talent and skills of every learner.
Nowadays, young people are indulge in different performing arts online application
(singing, dancing and acting) like tiktok, we sing and others. We can able to watch
their performances online and make it viral in the virtual world. Dance competitions
are everywhere in the country. From the school activities, barangay and town fiestas
up to national competition, dance is still part of it.

Directions: Create a dance performance, it can be individual, dual or group
(maximum 3) dancers. The dance performance must finish one song listed below. It
may be presented live or recorded depending on your choice.

DANCE EVALUATION
Directions: Watch one (1) dance performance online e.g. youtube, facebook or tiktok
and make a narrative evaluation on what you have observed in their performance
based on the elements of dance.
