OVERVIEW OF THE TOPIC

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several


dance genres including modern Jazz, lyrical and classical Ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to
connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movement. It is a common form of dance that
is often misunderstood. There is no rule of thumb to what type of elements their performance can
include but you will find a combination of techniques often ranging from ballet, jazz, modern,
break dancing, and even yoga and Pilates. In this lesson you are encouraged to set your energy
and enthusiasm for we are about to learn choreograph and perform dance that will surely
motivate and encourage not only your mind but also your body.

At the end of the week, the students are expected to:


1. Discuss the Contemporary Dance;
2. Enumerate the different types/form of Contemporary Dance;
3. Interpret the example of Contemporary Dance; and
4. Choreograph dance moves of types/ forms of Contemporary dance.

Activity 1: Picture Identification


Directions: Look at the pictures and analyze. What do you think of the dances shown below? Do
they look like foreign dances? Why?

 I think the dances below are Ballet, Ballroom, and Jazz. It looks like it’s from a foreign
country because of the steps shown in the picture as well as the costume they’re wearing.

Activity 2 - Share and Express


Directions: After you have identified and analyzed the pictures, give your answer to the
following questions.
1. What are the types of dances according to purpose and significance?
 Contemporary Dance

2. What are the elements of contemporary dances?


 Theme- most basic element of a dance. It conveys the message of a dance.
 Design – pattern of movement in time and space.
 Movement – The bodily actions of the dancers that include his steps.
 Technique – The skill of movement executed by the dancer
 Costume and body paraphernalia – Properties worn by the dancer that help reflect
the message customs and beliefs.
 Choreography – The figures and steps in dancing that enable the dancers to
perform in an organized manner.
 Scenery – The background or setting where the dance is performed to make it
more realistic and enriching.

Activity 3: Knowledge Enhancement


Directions: Read the following information that will enhance your knowledge about the concept.

Contemporary Dance – Is a performing art that involves rhythmic body movements within a
given space, choreograph based on musical beat. It is performed either in front of an audience or
by everyone on a dance floor.

Elements of contemporary dance consists of:


1. Theme- most basic element of a dance. It conveys the message of a dance.
2. Design – pattern of movement in time and space.
3. Movement – The bodily actions of the dancers that include his steps.
4. Technique – The skill of movement executed by the dancer
5. Costume and body paraphernalia – Properties worn by the dancer that help reflect the
message customs and beliefs.
6. Choreography – The figures and steps in dancing that enable the dancers to perform in an
organized manner.
7. Scenery – The background or setting where the dance is performed to make it more
realistic and enriching.

Types of Contemporary Dance

1. Modern dance – Is a broad genre of western concert or theatrical dance


which included dance styles such as ballet, folk ethnic religious and social dancing. It
was considered to have been developed as a rejection of or rebellion against classical
ballet and a way to express social concerns like socio economic and cultural factor.

2. Jazz dance – Is a social dance style that emerged at the turn of the 20th century. Jazz
dance combines techniques of classical ballet and modern dance with current forms of
popular dances. Jazz dance also has it own movement vocabulary ranging from the
isolation of certain body parts to the movement of the entire body and with the accents of
musical rhythms.
It is one of the most popular and well-known forms of dance. Jazz Dance includes
strength, flexibility, and conditioning. For technique and progression, it includes turns,
kicks and leaps.

Activity 4: Challenge my understanding

Directions: Read and answer the following questions.

1. What types/forms of dance do you like? Give your answer at least 3 or 4 sentences.
 For me, it is Jazz dance because it seems fun. Even though I’m not good of a
dancer, I’d like to try doing it too. Also, it’ll require more of my energy so this
will serve as an exercise as well.

2. What dances do you like and have seen performed?


 Jazz dance, but I only seen it in youtube.

3. What are some of the similarities and differences in the dance in terms of?

Directions: You will choreograph and interpret a 2-minute dance moves of


your chosen contemporary type/form of dance. Your output will be
assessed based on rubric criteria.
