Course Title: World Literature
Pre-requisite: None
Credit Unit: 3 Units
Contact Hours: 3 Hours/Week (18 weeks, 54 hours total)

Course Description:

This three (3) hour per week course designed and help students to develop and analyze the
world masterpieces of literature that deal with different aspects of human identity throughout history.
We will examine major text from different periods between the seventeenth and twentieth century and
discuss works from different genres including fiction, poetry, and drama. We will also consider the
meaning and definition of a “masterpiece.” In addition to primary works of literature, we will read several
contemporary and modern critical essay written on each text and view a film version of literary
masterpiece.

Course Objectives:
Generally, at the end of the semester,
 Be able to identify the major writer of world literature and define the importance of their works
from the 17th century to the present.
 Be able to analyze, interpret, and demonstration a critical understanding of the major themes in
world literature since the 1600s.
 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of time periods, growth and development in
Philippine Literature.
 Interpret literacy works in the context of socio-historical events.
 Read and write creatively and critically in the understanding of representative literacy works.
 Use technology in designing integrated lessons and instructional materials that are culturally
relevant and developmentally appropriate using Philippine literary works in English.
