Experiment No. 08

Aim To study Signal Conditioning Circuit for converting the given

physical parameter to electrical signal. Also calibrate the
output indicator for measurement of the given physical
parameter.

Objectives 1. Design the Signal Conditioning Circuit (SSC) to convert

change in resistance of Strain Gauge to electrical voltage.
The Strain Gauge is used for measurement of unknown
weight.
2. The initial value of the Strain Gauge resistance is 120 Ω
and it changes to 0.1 Ω for every change in 1 Kg of
weight.
3. Let us select the maximum weight to be measured as 5
Kg. Calibrate the scale of Display to read the Weight
directly such that for 0 Kg; Display should indicate 0 and
for 5 Kg Weight it should display 5.
4. Now display any unknown Weight being measured on
Digital Display by setting the resistance value of Strain
Gauge to represent the unknown Weight to be measured

Sr. No. Weight Expected Weight Measured (V)

1. 0 742.789 μ
2. 1 1.000
3. 2 2.012
4. 3 3.016
5. 4 4.020
6. 5 5.024

Conclusion:

• We have used an Instrumentation Differential Amplifier, which amplifies small

differences between input signals at the output.
• The input potentiometer affects the output gain.
The output increases with increase in value of R6.
• If both the inputs to the amplifier are the same (bridge is balanced), the output will be
ZERO irrespective of the value of R6.
• We change the value of the variable resistance connected to pins 1 and 8 in order to
get more accurate results at the output.
• The output should ideally be 0 V when the bridge is balanced but here, we get some
output in terms of microvolts.
