COMMITEE FOR LEGAL AID AND AWARENESS

WHAT IS LEGAL AID?


Legal Services includes providing Free Legal Aid to those weaker
sections of the society who fall within the purview of Section 12 of the
Legal Services Authority Act, 1987

LEGAL SERVICES AUTHORITIES? / WHAT IS THE NATURE OF FREE
LEGAL SERVICES?

Free legal aid is the provision of
criminal matters for those poor and marginalized people who
cannot afford the services of a lawyer for the conduct of a case or
a legal proceeding in any Court, Tribunal or Authority. These
services are governed by Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987
Provision of free legal aid may include:

a. Representation by an Advocate in legal proceedings.


b. Payment of process fees, expenses of witnesses and all other charges
payable or incurred in connection with any legal proceedings in
appropriate cases;
c. Preparation of pleadings, memo of appeal, paper book including
printing and translation of documents in legal proceedings;
d. Drafting of legal documents, special leave petition etc.
e. Supply of certified copies of judgments, orders, notes of evidence and
other documents in legal proceedings.

THE COMMITTEE SHALL...


The LEGAL AID AND AWARENESS COMMITTEE - SOL under MITWPU shall take steps
towards creating legal awareness by spreading legal literacy through legal
awareness camps, print media, digital media and organizing Lok Adalats for the
amicable settlement of disputes which are either pending or which are yet to be
filed, by way of compromise. The committee shall also undertake necessary steps
by way of social action litigation with regards to any matter of special concern to
the weaker sections of the society. Legal services also encompasses facilitating
the beneficiaries to get their entitlements under various government schemes,
policies and legislations

AIMS AND OBJECTS OF


THE COMMITTEE
a) To organizeLegal Aid in its various dimensions.

b)To organizeLegal Aid to Poor oriented to development.


c) To organizeLegal Services, such as;

(i) Identifying problems and difficulties of the poor and seeking its redressal ;

(ii) Attempting the resolution of the problems and grievances by approaching various
authorities and organizing various programs, social, economic and political on and off campus.
(iii) To sort out Legal problems which can be solved by resort to the legal process and take steps
for solution through Conciliation, Legal Advice and Legal aid in Litigation;

(v)Organizing legal literacy projects of various types;

(vi) Organizing Legal Advice in the pre-legal stage through and educational approach;

(vii) Organizing amicable settlement of the disputes by bringing about conciliation between the
parties the dispute;

(viii) Rendering assistance in complying with various legal requirements in order to secure the
benefits under various schemes sponsored by or on behalf of the Central or State Government
or any other public authority for the welfare of the general public or any section thereof;

(ix)Organizing Legal Aid in Litigations;

(x)Organizing Legal Reform in the procedure of law and also before and after the enactment of
a law;

(xi)Organizing inter College Competitions and such other things as are conducive and incidental
to provide legal aid to poor.

ROLES AND DUTIES OF THE COMMITTEE


•To arrange publication of booklets, leaflets, pamphlets,Articles,serious treatises and useful literature etc. on
and off socialmedia in English, Hindi and Marathiand to develop a suitable Legal Aid Kit or literature packet.

•To conduct activities in furtherance of the functions of the LEGAL AID COMMITIEEand Advice Board OF
ADVOCATES AND COLLEGE COMMITIEE.

•Arrange Meetings at intervals with the Advisory Board and Committee.

•To keep contactwith and seek support of the CentralCommittee for implementing Legal Aid Programs and
similar Nationaland International bodiesaround the city.

•To co-ordinate and collaborate with the activities of various Voluntary Organizations within and outside the
city engagedin programs and projects relatingto legal aid in any manner.

•To organizeand train a cadre of social workersamong the LAW FRATERN ITY OF SCHOOLOF LAW for para legal
services.

•To support PublicInterest Litigations provided, prima -facie, it appears to benefit personseligible for legal
support.

•To participate and organize HumanRights Movements in and out of the campus.

•To conduct camps, sivirs, seminars, conferences, clinics,services, grouptalks, campaigns etc. with or without
the use of various audio-visual techniques, so that legal Iiteracycan be spread among iiliterate or semi-
Iiteratepeople.
