Speed

Speed of an object is the distance travelled by the object in unit time.

Eg:- A car travels 18 km in one hour then the speed of the car is 18 km/hr
Formulas
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
1) 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 = 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒

𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
2) 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 = 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑

3) Distance = Speed × Time

4) Unit of speed = m/sec or km/hr

Note:-
a) How long = To find distance
b) How far = To find distance
c) How much = To find weight

Q.1 – Some boats have motors and go further into the sea. These boats travel faster at the speed of about
20 km in a hour.
a) How far would the motor boat go in 4 hours?
Sol. Here , Speed = 20 km/hr
Time = 4 hours
Distance = Speed × Time
= 20 × 4km
= 80 km

b) How much time will they take to go 60 km?

Sol. Here, Speed = 20 km/hr
Distance = 60 km
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 =
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑

60
=
20

= 3 hours
Q.2 If the train covers 100 km in 5 hours. Find the speed of the train?
Sol. Here, Distance = 100 km
Time = 5 hours
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 =
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒

100
=
5
= 20 km/hr
The Fish Market
Q.1Fazilla sells 8 kg of King fish for Rs. 1200. What is the cost of 1 kg of King fish?
Sol. Cost of 8 kg King fish = Rs. 1200
Rs.1200
Cost of 1 kg King fish = 8

= Rs. 150

Q.2Floramma sells prawns for Rs. 150 per kg. She has sold 10 kg prawns today. How much money did she
get for that?
Sol. Cost of 1 kg prawns = Rs. 150
Cost of 10 kg prawns = Rs. 150 × 10
= Rs. 1500

Q.3 Basheer has ₹100. He spends one-fourth of the money on squid and another three- fourth on
prawns. How much money did he spend on squid and prawns?
Sol. Total money Basheer had = Rs. 100
1
Money spent on squid = 4 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑦

1
= × 100
4

= Rs. 25
3
Money spent on prawns = 4 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑦

3
= 4 × 100

= Rs. 75
Therefore, Basheer spent Rs. 75 on prawns and Rs. 25 on squid.

Women’s Meenkar Bank

Loan - Lending or borrowing money from any source is called loan.

Q.1 Twenty fisherwomen have made their own bank. Each saves Rs. 25 every month and deposit
it in the bank. If they altogether collects Rs. 500 in every month, then how much money will be
collected in 10 years?
Sol. Given ,
Total fisherwomen = 20
Monthly collection of 1 fisherwoman = Rs. 25
Monthly collection of 20 fisherwomen = Rs. 500
As we know, 1 year = 12 months
Money collected in 1 year = Rs. 500 × 12
= Rs. 6000
Money collected in 10 years = Rs. 6000 × 10
= Rs. 60,000
Therefore they collected Rs. 60,000 in 10 years.

Q.2 Gracy took a loan of Rs. 4000 to buy a net. She paid Rs. 345 every month for one year. How
much money did she pay back to the bank?
Sol. Loan taken by Gracy = Rs. 4000
Money paid in 1 month = Rs. 345
Money paid in 1 year ( 12 months) = Rs. 345 × 12
= Rs. 4140
Therefore she paid back Rs. 4140 to the bank in 1 year.
