Explanatory Answers
Section : PART I Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation

Q.1

Assume that there were ‘x’ computer engineers initially.

Initially, the ratio of the number of electronics engineers and computer engineers = 2 : 1

∴ the number of electronics engineers = 2x

2x + x = 252 ⇒ x = 84

Let ‘y’ computer engineers were recruited.

The new ratio of the number of electronics engineers and computer engineers = 1 : 1

∴ 2 × 84 = 84 + y ⇒ y = 84

The sum of ages of all the engineers = 22(252 + 84) = 7392

If average age of computer engineers is ‘a’ years, average age of electronics engineers = (a + 2) years

∴ 168a + 168(a + 2) = 7392

∴ 168 × 2a = 7392 – 336 = 7056

∴ a = 21

The average age of computer engineers = 21 and the average age of electronic engineers = 23

Hence, [2].

Alternatively,

The new ratio of the number of electronics engineers and computer engineers = 1 : 1

I.e., the number of electronics engineers = the number of computer engineers

The average age of all the engineers is 22 years and the average age of the computer engineers is 2
years less than the average age of electronics engineers, the average age of the computer engineers
must be 21 years and the average age of electronics engineers must be 23 years.

Q.2
Raj covers 50 m in 5 seconds. Therefore he covers 1000 meters in 100 seconds.

As Rahul reaches 5 seconds before Raj, he covers 1000 meters in 95 seconds.

1000 200 10
∴ Rahul’s speed = = = 10 𝑚𝑚/𝑠𝑠
95 19 19

Hence, [3].

Q.3.

Let A be the event that company A releases a mobile, B be the event that company B releases a mobile
and C be the event that a mobile is a success.

P(A) = 0.7, P(C|A) = 0.8 and P(C∩B) = 0.28

𝑃𝑃(𝐶𝐶 ∩ 𝐴𝐴) 𝑃𝑃(𝐶𝐶 ∩ 𝐴𝐴)

𝑃𝑃(𝐴𝐴) = ⇒ 0.8 =
𝑃𝑃(𝐴𝐴) 0.7

P(C∩A) = 0.8 × 0.7 = 0.56

P(C∩A) + P(C∩B) = 0.56 + 0.28 = 0.84

∴, the probability of a mobile released by either company A or Company B during the next year is a
success = 0.84

The probability that the mobile is released by company A

𝑃𝑃(𝐶𝐶 ∩ 𝐴𝐴) 0.56 2

= = =
𝑃𝑃(𝐶𝐶 ∩ 𝐴𝐴) + 𝑃𝑃(𝐶𝐶 ∩ 𝐵𝐵) 0.84 3

Hence, [3].

Q.4

LCM(12, 18) = 36

Let the capacity of the tank be (36a) litres.

In one hour, pipe X fills (3a) litres while pipe Y empties (2a) litres.

Pipe X was filling the tank for 14 hours. Assume that pipe Y was working for ‘y’ hours.

∴ 14(3a) – y(2a) = 36a

∴ 21 – y = 18
∴ y = 3 hours.

Thus, the pipe was closed at 11 am.

Hence, [3].

Q.5

500

Hence, [2].

Q.6

As Anuj takes 1 day to complete the job, Bharat takes 2 days, Chetan takes 4 days and Dhiraj takes 8
days.
LCM(1, 2, 4 and 8) = 8 units
Workdone by Anuj, Bharat, Chetan and Dhiraj in one day is 8 units, 4 units, 2 units and 1 unit
respectively.
The second fastest pair must be Anuj and Chetan, while the second slowest pair must be Bharat and
Dhiraj.
As statement (C) is correct, we can eliminate the second and the fourth options. As statement (B) is false
statement, we can eliminate the first option.
Hence, [3].

Note:
Chetan and Dhiraj together complete 2 + 1 = 3 units in a day. The two take 8/3 days to complete the
work. Therefore, (A) is correct statement.
Bharat and Dhiraj together complete 4 + 1 = 5 units in a day. The two take 8/5 days to complete the
work. (D) is incorrect statement.

Q.7

Statement I:

(543)6 = 5 × 62 + 4 × 6 + 3 = 180 + 24 + 3 = 207

(317)8 = 3 × 82 + 1 × 8 + 7 = 192 + 8 + 7 = 207

(543)6 = (317)8

Statement II:

Multiple of 16 will be of the form k × 16 = k × 24

∴ 16k = k × 24 + 0 × 23 + 0 × 22 + 0 × 21 + 0 × 20 = (k0000)2 , last four bits = 0000

This statement is false.

Hence, [3].

Q.8

The digits 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 appear 3, 2, 1, 2, 1 and 1 times respectively.

The odd digits 3, 5 and 7 appear (2 + 2 + 1) = 5 places in original number.

5!
These can be arranged in odd places in ways.
(2!)2

(3+1+1)! 5!
Similarly, remaining digits can be arranged in = ways.
3! 3!

(5!)2
Total number of ways of required arrangement = 3! (2!)2

Hence, [4].

Q.10

Diameter = 0.7 m ⇒ r = 0.35 m

Length of the roller = 4 m

Therefore, in one rotation, area covered by the roller = 2 × π × 0.35 × 4 = 8.8 sq. m

In 2000 rotation, the roller covers 2000 × 8.8 = 17600 sq. m

Total cost of levelling the road = 4 × 17600 = Rs. 70400

Hence, [3].

Q.11

(–6, 0) is on the graph. (–6, 0) do not satisfy the first two equations.

Now consider (–8, 2)

|x + y| – |x – y| = |–8 + 2| – |–8 – 2| = 6 – 10 = –4

|x + y| – |x – y| = 0 does not describe the graph.

It can be seen that all points satisfy |x| – |y| = 6

Hence, [3].

Q.12
The roots obtained by Sarika: 12 and 16

Hence, [2].

Q.15

Let there be ‘a’ girls in the company.

80 × 50000 + a × 40000 = (80 + a) × 48000

∴ 80(50000 – 48000) = a(48000 – 40000)

∴ 80 × 2000 = a × 8000

∴ a = 20

Hence, [3].

Q.16
A’s investment: 50000 for 3 months, 40000 for 9 months

B’s investment: 60000 for 3 months, 80000 for 6 months

Ratio in which A and B share the profits

= 17 : 22

Hence, [3].

Q.17

Let the price of a banana be Rs. B.

∴ the price of an orange = 3B
∴ the price of an apple = 6B

The price of 20 apples, 20 oranges and 20 bananas = 20(6B + 3B + B) = 200B

New prices -
Apple: 1.1 × 6B = 6.6B
Orange: 1.3 × 3B = 3.9B
Banana: 1.2 × B = 1.2B

The new price of 20 apples, 20 oranges and 20 bananas = 20(6.6B + 3.9B + 1.2B) = 234B
234𝐵𝐵 – 200𝐵𝐵
The required percentage increase = × 100 = 17%
200𝐵𝐵

Hence, [2].
Q.18

Let SR be ‘x’ units. We can draw following diagram.

In ∆PSQ, PS2 = 212 – (3x)2

In ∆PSR, PS2 = 92 – (x)2

212 – (3x)2 = 92 – (x)2

∴ 441 – 9x2 = 81 – x2

∴ 441 – 81 = 9x2 – x2

∴ 8x2 = 360

∴ x2 = 45

∴ x = 3√5

∴ QR = 4x = 12√5

Hence, [4].

Q.19

The angle made by exports of Japan exceeds that of Australia by 45 – 18 = 27

360° represent $144000 billion.

27
Therefore 27° represent 144000 × = $ 10800 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏
360

Hence, [1].
Q.20

Average angle represented by a country = 360/11 = 32.73

Value of the angle made by empty space = 360 – (27 + 19.8 + … + 45 + 41.4) = 30.6
Therefore, the countries whose exports are more than 32.73 are Russia, Others, USA, Japan and
Germany. i.e., 5
Hence, [2].

Q. 21

Sum of the angles made by exports of USA and France together = 54 + 27 = 81

Sum of the angle made by exports of Japan, China, Russia and Hongkong = 45 + 19.8 + 37.8 + 19.8 =
122.4
81 × 100
The required percentage = 122.4
= 66.1764

Hence, [4].

Q.22

Sum of the angles made by exports of USA and Japan together = 54 + 45 = 99

Sum of the angle made by exports of Australia and France = 18 + 27 = 45
The required ratio = 99 : 45 = 11 : 5
Hence, [3].

Section : PART II Logical Reasoning
Q.1

Input number : a
The corresponding number in Step IV: a × a + a + 5 – 2 = a(a + 1) + 3
If the number in Step IV = 159, the input number for this step must be: 159 – 3 = 156
We need to find ‘a’ such that a(a + 1) = 156
If a = 10 or 13, the product will not end with digit 6.
For a = 12, a(a + 1) = 156
Hence, [3].

Q.2

ABCD is coded as CABF: A + 2 = C, B – 1 = A, C – 1 = B, D + 2 = F

FGHI is coded as HFGK: F + 2 = H, G – 1 = F, G – 1 = H, I + 2 = K
UVWX is coded as WUVZ: U + 2 = W, V – 1 = U, W – 1 = V, X + 2 = Z
Now K + 2 = M, L – 1 = K, M – 1 = L, N + 2 = P
Therefore, KLMN is coded as MKLP.
Hence, [2].

Q.3

Input number: a

Step I: a × a

Step II: a × a + a = a(a + 1)

Step III: a(a + 1) + 5

For the fifth number from the left end in Step III, we need to consider input number 8.

The required number in Step III: 8 × 9 + 5 = 72 + 5 = 77

None of the given options has answer 77.

Q.4

Given series: 7, 9, 14, 27, 28, 81, ….

Consider numbers at odd places and even places.

(7, 14, 28, …) and (9, 27, 81, …)

In the first series, the next term is twice the previous term and in the second series, the next term is
thrice the previous term.

We need to find the 7th term. i.e., the fourth term of 7, 14, 28, …

Ie., 28 × 2 = 56

Hence, [4].

Q.5

77 = 7 × (7 + 4)

14 × (14 + 4) = 14 × 18 = 252

Hence, [2].

Q.6

Note that there are 3 Es in RESERVE and 3 Gs in GXTGUGT.

If we reverse order of letters of RESERVE, we get EVRESER (+2) ⇒ GXTGUGT

When reversed letters of PRESENT, the new arrangement: TNESERP

TNESERP (+2) = VPGUGTR

Hence, [1].

Q.7

B is replaced by B + 3 = E, C is replaced by C + 3 = F and G is replaced by G + 3 = J

FALSE is coded as (F + 3)(A + 3)(L + 3)(S + 3)(E + 3) i.e., IDOVH.

Hence, [3].
Q.8

Chick is a young chicken. Piglet is a young pig. Hence [2].

Q.9

T is neighbour of R and V. V is neighbour of U. ⇒ V is between T and U.

Hence, [1].

Q.10

The first statement must be “If A#B means A is mother of B”.

P$Q ⇒ P is father of Q.
Q#R ⇒ Q is mother of R.
R@S ⇒ R is brother of S.
Therefore, R is P’s grandson.
Hence, [1].
Note: If “If A#B means B is mother of A”
P$Q ⇒ P is father of Q.
Q#R ⇒ R is mother of Q.
Here, R is P’s wife. None of the option has this answer.

Q.11

To get original word:

First four letters of ITNIETAM are written in the reverse order in first four places and the last four letters
of ITNIETAM are written in the reverse order in last four places.

TREVNIETARBI has 12 letters.

To get original word, we need to reverse order of first six places and these six letter will now be the first
six letters of original word. Similarly we can obtain last six letters.

The original word: INVERTIBRATE

Hence, [2].
Q.12

S is lighter than Q only ⇒ Q is the heaviest and S is second heaviest.

(The lightest person), _ , _ , P, S , Q

R is lighter than T, R is not lightest. Therefore, the lightest person must be U. Thus, we have

U, R, T, P, S, Q

Hence, [1].

Q.13

It is clear that the two statements cannot answer the question independently.

From statement II, Ram read 300 pages before Monday. From statement I; he read last 30 pages on
Tuesday.

Therefore, Ram read the remaining i.e., 600 – (300 + 30) = 270 pages on Monday.

Hence, [4].

Q.14

Option 1 is contrary to the given statement. Nothing has been stated about the effects of not going for
shopping. Thus, option 2 is not related to the statement. Option 3 logically follows from the given
statement since it is a negation of both parts of the statement. Hence [3].

Q.15

Options 2 and 3 logically follow from the given statement. Option 1 cannot be inferred. Hence [4].
Q.16

Input number: a
Step I: a × a
Step II: a × a + a = a(a + 1)
Step III: a(a + 1) + 5
Step IV: a(a + 1) + 5 – 2 = a(a + 1) + 3

Considering all the options, the last digit of the input is either 3 or 1. Also the first digit is 2 or 3

If a = 3, a(a + 1) + 3 = 3 × 4 + 3 = 15

But, the first and the last digit of Step IV is 9 and 5 respectively. ∴ a ≠ 3 This eliminates option 1 and 4.

Consider the second digit of options 2 and 3. The input digit must be either 10 or 8.

If input digit in this place is 10, the corresponding digit must be 10 × 11 + 3 = 113. But the data has 75 in
this place.

8 × 9 + 3 = 75

Therefore 2, 8, 10, 14, 5, 1 is the input.

Hence, [3].

Q.17

Consider statement D. P is W’s neighbour. So we can eliminate first two options.

Now considering remaining two options, either V or U is W’s other neighbour.

Consider statement C. U is at one of the ends and T is U’s neighbour i.e., only neighbour. So, U cannot be
W’s neighbour.

Hence, [3].

Q.18

REPTILE has 7 letters. 7 × 7 = 49

SNAKE has 5 letters. 5 × 5 = 25

CROCODILE has 9 letters. Therefore the code must be 9 × 9 = 81

Hence, [3].
Q.19

The difference between consecutive terms is 15, 20, 25 and 30.

Therefore the next difference must be 35.

The next term = 120 – 35 = 85

Hence, [1].

Q.20

Statement 1 is a possibility (may read). Hence it can be inferred. Since the notice talks about
prosecution, hence Statement 2 can also be inferred. Hence [3].

Q.21

Consider sequence of first letters from each group. F, I, L, O, R.

The next letter is obtained by skipping two letters. So the next term will start with U.

Consider sequence of letters in the second place from each group. A, C, E, G, I.

The next letter is obtained by skipping one letter. So the next letter will be K.

Consider sequence of letters in the third place from each group. C, F, I, L, O.

The next letter is obtained by skipping one letter. So the next letter will be R.

Therefore the next group of letters is UKR.

Hence, [4].

Q.22

Note that the last letter of a group is same as the first letter of the next group. There are three
consecutive letters of alphabet in each group. As the second group ends with letter F, the third group
should have letters F, G and H.

The answer option could be 3 or 4.

Hence, [3].
Q.23

All the statements logically follows from the given statement. Hence [4].

Q.24

5671 – 2835 = 2836

8505 – 5671 = 2834

11344 – 8505 = 2839

Instead of 11344, if there is 11337, the last difference would be 2832.

Hence, [3].

Q.25

The first option cannot be inferred as it contrary to the given statement. Similarly, option 3 is rejected.
Option 2 logically follows from the statement. Hence [1].
