a) A car owner buys petrol at Tk. 75, Tk. 80 and Tk. 85 per liter for the three
successive years. What approximately is the average cost per liter of petrol if
he spends Tk. 40000 each year in this concern?

Solution:
40000 1600
Consumption of petrol in Year-1 = liters = liters
75 3
40000
Consumption of petrol in Year-2 = liters = 500 liters
80
40000 8000
Consumption of petrol in Year-3 = liters = liters
85 17
1600 8000 76700
Total Consumption in 3 years = + 500 + = liters.
3 17 51

Total expenditure for petrol in 3 years = Tk. (40000×3) = Tk. 120000.

120000
So, average cost per liter of petrol = Tk. = Tk. 79.79 (approximately).
76700
51

Answer: Tk. 79.79 (approximately).

b) P is a working and Q is an investing partner. P puts in Tk. 340000 and Q
puts Tk. 650000. P receives 20% of the profits for managerial works. The rest
is distributed in proportion to their capitals. Out of a total profit of Tk. 99000,
how much does P get?

Solution:
Ratio of their capitals P:Q = 340000:650000 = 34:65.
Total Profit = Tk. 99000.
Received by P,
for managerial works = Tk. 99000 × 20% = Tk. 19800.
34
for capital contribution = Tk. (99000-19800) × = Tk. 27200.
34+65

So, P got a total amount of Tk. (19800+27200) = Tk. 47000.

Answer: Tk. 47000.

c) A lawn is in the form of a rectangle having its sides in the ratio 2:3. The
1
area of the lawn is hectares. Find the length and breadth of the lawn.
6

Solution:
We know,
1 hectare = 10000 square meters.
1 1 5000
hectares = 10000 × = square meters.
6 6 3

Suppose, the length and the breadth of the rectangle are 3x and 2x meters
respectively.
According to the question,

and the breadth of the rectangle is = 2 × meters = 33.33 meters.
3

Answer: length 50 meters, breadth 33.33 meters.

d) Consider an example from a maintenance shop. The inter-arrival times of
tools at that shop are exponential with an average time of 10 minutes. The
length of the service time is assumed to be exponentially distributed, with
mean 6 minutes. Estimate the fraction of the day an operator will be idle.

Solution:
24×60
Number of arrivals of tools in a day = = 144.
10

Idle time of an operator in each inter-arrival time = (10-6) minutes = 4

minutes.
So, total idle time in a day = (144×4) minutes = 576 minutes.
576 2
Fraction of the day an operator will be idle = =
(24×60) 5

f) Prove that a parallelogram inscribed in a circle must be a rectangle.

Solution:
Suppose, ABCD is a parallelogram inscribed to a
circle.
We know,
i) If a quadrilateral is inscribed in a circle, the sum
of the opposite two angles will be equal to 180°.
ii) The opposite angles of a parallelogram are equal
to each other.
iii) If an angle of a parallelogram is 90°, the parallelogram is a rectangle.
iv) A parallelogram is a quadrilateral.
In the figure, as the quadrilateral ABCD is inscribed to the circle, we can say
∠A + ∠C = 180°.
As ABCD is a parallelogram, we can say, ∠A = ∠C
180°
So, ∠A = ∠C = = 90°.
2

As the angle A of the parallelogram ABCD is a 90° angle, we can say, ABCD
is a rectangle.
Therefore, a parallelogram inscribed in a circle must be a rectangle. (Proved)

g) The angle of elevation of a hot air balloon, climbing vertically from 25
degrees to 60 degrees at 10.00 am and at 10.02 am respectively. The point of
observation of the angle of elevation is situated 300 meters away from the take
off point. What is the upward speed (m/sec), assumed constant for the
balloon?

Solution:
Suppose, P is the initial position of the balloon on the
ground, C and D are its positions at 10.00 am and
10.02 am respectively, and A is the point of
observation.
According to the question,
∠DAP = 60°
∠CAP = 25°
AP = 300 meters.
DP
In ∆ADP, = tan ∠DAP
AP
DP
or, = tan 60° = √3
300

or, DP = 300√3 ≈ 300×1.7321 … (i)

CP
In ∆ACP, = tan ∠CAP
AP
CP
or, = tan 25° ≈ 0.4363 [workings-1]
300

or, CP = 300×0.4363 … (ii)

Subtracting (ii) from (i) we get,
DP – CP = 300×1.7321 – 300×0.4363
= 300(1.7321-0.4363)
= 300 × 1.2958
= 388.74 meters.
So, in 2 minutes the balloon covered a distance of approximately 388.74
meters.
Therefore, the approximate speed of the balloon is

388.74
= ) m/s = 3.24 m/s
2×60

Answer: 3.24 m/s (approximately).

Workings:
1. We know,
1° = 0.0174533c
So, 25° = 25×0.0174533c = 0.4363c
tan 25° ≈ tan(0°+25°) ≈ 0+0.4363 = 0.4363

[Note: if you use calculator, then:

tan 60° = 1.7321
tan 25° = 0.4663
CD = 300 × (1.7321×0.4663) = 379.74 meters.
Speed = 379.74 ÷ (2×60) = 3.16 m/s. ]
