ASKING FOR AND GIVING DIRECTIONS IN ENGLISH

In this time, we will get to know how to ask for directions and how to give directions to someone
in English.

Asking for directions to go somewhere.


1. Where is the chemist?
2. Can you give me directions to the nearest bus stop?
3. How do you get to the train station?
4. Where can I find the nearest bakery?

Asking for and giving directions with examples


1.
A: Excuse me sir. Is there a bank around here?
B: Yes, there is one right across the street next to the Hospital.

2.
A: Can you give me directions to the petrol station?
B: Of course, just follow this road until you come to the main road. Turn right and then continue
for about 100 meters. You will see the petrol station on the left.

A: Can you tell me how to get to the London bridge?
B: I’m sorry I can’t help as am not from around here.

A: Where’s the nearest bus station?
B: It’s on the corner of Oxford Street and Mayfair Lane. Next to the train station.

A: How do you get to the mall?
B: You have to go straight along this road for about 200 meters. Turn right when you see Apple
street. Carry on straight ahead till you see a Tesco supermarket. The mall is opposite the
supermarket.

A:Is there a Library near here?
B: Yes, there is one in Orange Street. Orange Street is the third road on your right.

A: Excuse me sir. Could you please tell me where I can find the nearest chemist?
B: Yes, there is one next to the Bakery. Go back the way you came. Turn right after you go past
the bank and there is one on your left next to the hospital.

Asking for and giving directions phrases


It is on the left : Itu di sebelah kiri
It is on the right : Itu di sebelah kanan
It is straight on : Itu lurus
Opposite : Berlawanan
Near : Dekat
Next to : Di samping
Between : Antara
At the end of (Oxford street) : Diujung (Jalan Oxford)
On the corner of (James road) : Di sudut (Jalan James)
At the end of (Stanley Street) : Di ujung (Jalan Stanley)
Behind the Petrol station : Di belakang pom bensin
In front of the Mall : Di depan Mall
Just around a corner from here : Hanya sekitar satu pojokan dari sini
Landmarks you can use when giving directions
When giving directions you will often use landmarks as a way of giving directions.
Example:
A: Excuse me sir. Is there a bank around here?
B: Yes, there is one right across the street next to Library.

Example of conversation:

Mr Jones : I’m planning to go there by car. Please could you tell me the easiest way of getting
to your house?
Mrs Adams : Take the M6 to London and you need to come off at junction 78.
Mr Jones : London, could you spell that for me?
Mrs Adams : L - o - n - d - o – n, it is clear enough?
Mr Jones : Yes, it is, Thanks.
Mrs Adams : Alright, then turn right at the roundabout and take the second right my house is on
the left next to the local pet store.
Mr Jones : Is that the quickest way of getting to your house?
Mrs Adams : Yes, it is the quickest way by car.
Mr Jones : Would it be possible for you draw me a map please, as I don't know the area very
well as I am from Blackburn.
Mrs Adams : Yes I will draw a map and send you a copy in an email with some directions we
have just talked about.
Mr Jones : Thank you so much.
Mrs Adams : You are welcome.

Direction: Please read the material above and try to understand it and ask the teacher if you
have any difficulty. After that, choose a partner and imitate three dialogues below with
him/her, copy the dialogue by handwritten to your notebook, take its photo and record your
voices while reading it.

Going to the Bank (Pergi ke Bank)

Man: Excuse me. Can you tell me the way to the bank?
You: Yes, sure. Turn left at the end of this street.
Man: At the traffic lights?
You: Yes. Then go as far as the roundabout.
Man: And at the roundabout?
You: Turn right at the roundabout into Dee Road.
Man: OK ... right at the roundabout.
You: Go down Dee Road. The bank's on the left.
Man: Thank you.
You: Goodbye.

Dialogue 2
Getting to the train station (Pergi ke stasiun kereta)

Tourist: Excuse me. May I have your time?


Citizen: Yes. How can I help you?
Tourist: Can you show me the fastest way to get to the train station, please?
Citizen: You can take a taxi or a bus from the bus stop.
Tourist: Okay. Where should I go from there?
Citizen: If you take a taxi, you can get off right at the train station. Just ask the driver to go to
Grand City Train Station.
Tourist: And, how to go there by a bus?
Citizen: Just take a bus number 003 and get off at Grand City Train Station bus stop.
Tourist: Is it far from the bus stop?
Citizen: No. it’s pretty near from there. The bus stop is around 200 meters from the station.
Tourist: I see. Thank you very much!
Citizen: You’re welcome.

Dialogue 3
Going to the nearest supermarket (Pergi ke swalayan terdekat)

Tourist: Hello.
Citizen: Hi. What can I help you?
Tourist: Sorry to bother you. But, could you tell me where the nearest supermarket is?
Citizen: Which supermarket do you want to go? There are regular supermarket and Asian
supermarket around here.
Tourist: Err… Regular supermarket, I suppose.
Citizen: Then, you can go by walking. It’s about two blocks from here. Go along this road until
you pass a blue building. The supermarket is across that building.
Tourist: That’s a clear direction. Thank you!
Citizen: No problem. Be careful. There might be a construction there.
Tourist: Of course!
