UNIT ACTIVITY 1.

B
WORD PROBLEM

Instructions: Solve for the given word problems. You may do this on a word document or you may also
accomplish this on a short bond paper and take a picture of your answers to be sent here
on canvas. A rubric is provided below on how you will be graded. Each item is equivalent to
4 pts.

1. A car travels along a straight road 100 m east then 50 m west. Find distance and displacement of
the car.

50 m 50 m

100 m

Distance = 100 m + 50 m Displacement = 100 m – 50 m

= 150 m = 50 m, east

2. Car’s speedometer reads 10,500 km at the start of a trip and 10,700 km at the end. Determine
distance and displacement.

Distance = 10,700 km – 10,500 km Displacement = 0 km (as there is no given

= 200 km direction)

3. A laser beam is aimed 15.950 above the horizontal at a mirror 11,648 m away. It glances off the
mirror and continues for an additional 8570 m at 11.440 above the horizon until it hits its target.
What is the resultant displacement of the beam to the target?

4. A mountain climbing expedition establishes a base camp and two intermediate camps, A and B.
Camp A is 11,200 m east of and 3,200 m above camp. Camp B is 8400 m east of and 1700 m
higher than Camp A. Determine the displacement between base camp and Camp B.
Camp B
---------------------------------
------- 1,700 m

8,400 m

Camp A

Base Camp

X = 11,200 + 8,400

5. A person walks 4 meters east, the walks 3 meters north. Determine distance and displacement.

-----------------------------------------------------------

3m
Distance = 4m + 3m Let h be the displacement
2 2 2
=12m h =a +b
2 2 2
h =4 +3
h2 =16+9
2
h =25
h=5m
