Looking Back
In Grade 6, you learned how friction and gravity affect the motion of an object. Let’s see
if you still remember some of the topics about friction before we proceed to the more
exciting topics about MOTION!
Directions:
Identify the type of friction. Choose your answer from the box and write your answer on
the space provided under each picture.

Brief Introduction
Many things around us move. The leaves of trees, the waves in the
ocean, the air that surrounds us, the animals, machines and vehicles, and
even our planet, Earth is moving! But how can we say that something has
moved or something is in motion? This module will help you understand the
basic concept of the motion of an object.
The activities in this module will equip you with the knowledge about
motion that will be enhanced as you continue to study motion in the next
grade level.

A.Study the illustration. Describe the position of the object being asked.
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
Example: What is the position of the frog with respect to the tree? -20m

Objectives
define speed operationally;
differentiate speed from velocity.
A. SPEED
Directions: Read the story below. Analyze and record data gathered by a group
of students.
A group of students was asked by their teacher to perform the activity. “The Fast
and the Curious” Joshua, the leader, looked for a spacious place on the campus
where each member can walk in a straight path. He measured 10 meters on the
ground and marked "start" at 0 meters and “finish” at the end of 10 meters.
Holding a stopwatch, he then asked each member to walk as fast as they could
from the start to the end of the 10-meter straight path. The first member, Trisha
took 8 seconds to reach the finish line. The second member Jhon finished the
straight path in 7 seconds the third member Paul finished it in 5 seconds and
Joshua himself, finished it in 6 seconds.
5
Now it’s your turn. Help them find out who walks the
fastest in their group! Follow these instructions:
To get the speed of each participant, simply divide the distance traveled by
the time it took them to travel such distance.
Use this formula: Speed = distance
time
5.Based on your computation, who walks the fastest in their
group?_________

Guide Questions:
1.What is the velocity of car A? __2km/h_, East
II.Procedure
1.Read the given problems carefully.
2.Compute for speed and velocity. Use the following formulas below:
2. What is the velocity of a car that travels 180km East of Laguna in 2 hours?
D 120 30 t=d÷s
E 80 20

Remember
Motion is defined as a change in position for a particular time interval.
Point of Reference (reference point)
Distance refers to the total length of the path traveled by an object which
can be expressed in meter, kilometer, miles, and other units of length. In
Illustrations it is usually represented by a broken line.
Displacement refers to the shortest distance between the object’s two
position, like the distance between its point of origin and its point of
destination, no matter what path it took to get that destination. In
illustrations, displacement is represented by a straight line marked from the
initial position and final position of an object.
Speed tells us how fast the object moved. It is expressed
mathematically by getting the total distance traveled by an
object divide by the time it took to travel such distance.
Velocity refers to the rate of motion of a body with
reference to its direction It is simply defined as a speed
with direction.
Constant Speed refers to the rate of motion with
equal distance-time intervals.
Constant Velocity means that the object in motion is
moving in a straight path at a constant speed.
