Describing Motion
Learning Objective
Sub-Tasks:
1. Determine whether the given condition is showing the distance travelled or the
displacement;
2. Use the concept of distance and displacement in explaining the motion of an object;
3. Characterize speed and velocity;
4. Identify if the given situation is asking for speed or velocity;
5. Determine whether an object in motion is experiencing acceleration; and
6. Consider the concept of acceleration in describing motion;
7. Solve the speed/velocity and acceleration of an object.
Key Concepts
“How Far”
Distance (d) travelled refers to the length of the entire path that the object travelled.
Displacement (D) refers to the shortest distance between the objects initial position and
final position, no matter what path it took to get to that destination.
“How Fast”
Speed (s) is defined as the distance covered divided by the time of travel. Average speed
can be defined as the total distance covered divided by the total time of travel.
Instantaneous speed is the speed at any instant. The SI unit for speed is m/s.
d
Distance travelled s=
or
Speed = t
Time interval
Velocity (v) is defined as speed with the direction of motion. Constant velocity means
both constant speed and direction of travel. The SI unit for velocity is m/s in the
direction of motion.
Displacement D
Velocity = or v=
Time interval t
Acceleration (a) is the rate at which velocity changes with time. The changes in velocity
may be in its magnitude or directions or both.
If an object covers varying displacement at equal intervals of time, then it is moving with
changing velocity. It means that the object is accelerating.
Instances of an object experiencing acceleration:
or
vf = 1.0m/s
vf =0m/s
If an object does not change its position at any given time interval (zero displacement),
then it is at rest or its velocity is zero and the object is not accelerating.
v = 0m/s
vi = 1.0m/s vf = 1.0m/s

What to do:
1. Study the illustrations below. Take note of the distance travelled represented
by broken lines (--------), and the displacement represented by continuous line
( ).
2. Pay attention to the direction of motion which is considered in displacement.
3. Determine whether the given condition is showing the distance travelled or the
displacement.
4. Write the word Distance or Displacement in the space provided.

What to do:
1. Study the definition of speed and velocity. Speed is the distance covered per
unit of time and velocity is displacement per unit of time.
2. Consider that velocity is speed with direction.
3. Identify if the given situation is showing for speed or velocity.
4. Write Speed or Velocity in the space provided.
A. B.
d = 2.0m
D = 2.0m
t = 2.0s
t = 2.0s
d = 1.0m
t = 1.0s
The dog ran at a rate of 1.0 m/s to the east. The dog travelled at a rate of 1.0 m/s.

Illustration A Illustration B
D = 1m d = 1m d = 1m
t = 1s
t = 1s t = 1s
d = 2m
t = 2s
The dog moved at a rate of 1 m/s to the south. The dog circled at a rate of 1m/s.

without considering its direction of motion?

2. Is it possible for the dog running around the sofa to have a certain speed but zero
velocity?
_______________________________________________________________________
3. What is the speed of the dog if it ran around the sofa in half the time it used to in
illustration D?
_______________________________________________________________________
4. Considering the final position of the dog in illustration D is the same as its initial
position, what is its velocity?

2. Can you consider this as an accelerating motion? __________________________
3. From at rest the dog ran to 2m/s in 1s to the east. What is its acceleration?
___________________________________________________________________________
4. If in case, you ran along with the dog in guide question no. 3, and you increased
your velocity from 5m/s to 7m/s in 1s to the east. Which accelerated much
faster? ___________________________________________________________________
Remember 2020? How did you cope up with the quarantine? Will you share with us your
experience? Did you move around the sofa just like the dog or move around the house randomly
and ends up back were you started? If so, what was the distance covered? What was your
displacement? Did you experience having certain speed as you move around but zero velocity?
Did you experience any acceleration? Overall, how will you describe your state of motion, and
what are the challenges in describing it? Use the scoring rubric below as your guide. Good Luck!
