INTRODUCTION

A. Rationale

Swine (Sus domesticus) are monogastric (single stomach), a litter-bearing mammal that

weighs between 400 and 600 pounds at maturity, depending on breed and gender. In general

usage, swine are referred to as hogs and pigs. The term “hogs” generally refers to mature

animals, and “pigs” to young animals, (Lapuz, 2009).

Philippines is the top eight (8) pork producing country in the world, according to USDA

Foreign Agricultural Service. The country’s total swine inventory as of January 1, 2016, was

12.5 million heads. This was 3.98 percent higher than last year’s inventory of 12.00 million

heads. Stocks in backyard farms went up by 2.27%. Likewise, stocks in commercial farms grew

by 7.15% compared to the 2015 level. About 64.0 percent of the total stocks were raised in

backyard farms and the rest were in commercial farms, (Ocampo, 2016).

In Occidental Mindoro, the total backyard hog inventory as of 2012 was 62, 825 heads

and 3,543 head coming from commercial hog production according to Bureau of Agricultural

Statistics, (Tambasen, 2016).

An additional economic benefit from swine production is its potential for social inclusion

since 43% of the four million Filipinos in the agriculture sector continue to be employed by this

sector. In particular, 64% of the 12.5 million swine inventories in 2016 were produced by

backyard or smallholder producers. By 2022 and 2027, per capita pork consumption is projected

to grow to 15.6 kg and 16.4 kg per year, respectively. In order to support this projected increase

in per capita consumption, the 2016 swine population of 12.5 million heads will have to grow by

at least 10 percent to reach 13.72 million heads by 2027, (Catelo, 2017)

Swine industry is consistently the second most important contributor to the value of

agricultural production in the Philippines. Being also the largest subsector of the livestock and

poultry industries of the country, it plays a major role in achieving national food security and

providing employment and income opportunities particularly to smallholder producers. These are

the reasons why the proponents decided to engage in hog fattening project.

B. Brief Description of the Microproject

The proponents raised four (4) heads of hog for fattening project only within a period of

four months and the piglet production will be on the second and preceding cycle. The animals

were reared in a shed type housing made up of bamboo and cogon/buli. Through capital sharing

the project operate.

The proponents used also the liquid trichoderma as another technology intervention in

utilizing the waste of the animals by converting it into organic fertilizer. It is a good source of

cellulose, a natural agent which hastens the decomposition of plants and other organic materials,

(Cooper, 2003.)

Objectives

The following are the objectives of the project:

1) Generate a net income atleast 70-80 percent ROI.

2) Produce four (4) heads of quality hogs with an average weight of 75 kg. per head within a

period of 4 months.
CHAPTER II

MARKETING ASPECT

Marketing Strategies

1) Product

Fattened hogs will be the product of this project.

2) Price

The price will be based on the prevailing market price of PhP 220.00 per kilogram

dressed weight.

3) Place of Distribution

The product will be sold to Calintaan, Occidental Mindoro.

4) Promotion

The product will be sold through personal communication or through canvassing

five (5) days before the fattened hogs will be disposed.

5) Payment Scheme

The product will be paid on cash basis.

CHAPTER III
TECHNICAL ASPECT
A. Proposed Production Technology

Product Description

The product of the project will be fattened hogs with an expected weight of 75

kilograms each head. The breed that will be raised is landrace. They are white in color, have

a rather fine hair coat, long snouts and heavy drooping ears. They have long bodies, deep

smooth sides and a noticeable lack of excess fat and wrinkles. Controlled feeding will be

adopted in feeding using commercial feeds and dry feeding is the system that will be used to

avoid spoilage of the feeds.

Production Process

a. Cleaning and Disinfection of Rearing Pen

The fattening pen will be prepared one week before the arrival of stocks. This will be

disinfected using detergent soap.

b. Purchase of Stocks

The proponents will purchase four (4) heads of weanlings from the reputable piggery

with an average weight of 15 kilograms with healthy characteristics such as fine hair coat

and bright eyes.

c. Feeds and Feeding

Table 2 shows the feeds and feeding proper needed by the animals in the whole cycle

of four (4) heads.

Starter 150 Dry Feeding Controlled Two times a day
Grower Crumble 405 Dry Feeding Controlled Two times a day
Finisher Crumble 165 Dry Feeding Controlled Two times a day

Table Discussion

Table 2 shows the feeds requirements in the whole duration of the project and these are

45 kilograms of pre- starter feeds, 150 kilograms of starter feeds, 405 kilograms of grower

crumble and 165 kilograms of finisher crumble.

d. Water Management

Stocks will be given clean water for their cooling and daily water intake.

e. Sanitation

Sanitation will be given priority in keeping healthy environment in the project.

Housing will be kept clean. The animals will always be kept clean and provided with

ample protection against pest and diseases.

f. Prevention and Control of Diseases

The piglet will be given water soluble vitamins and mineral supplement at the time of

arrival. This will help animal avoid stress during travel and transfer.

g. Waste Disposal

Pig manure will be collected and dumped into a hole for compost production in the

future.

h. Project Size

The project will raise four (4) heads of fatteners.

i. Farm Location

The proponents will be conducting the project at Iriron, Calintaan, Occidental

Mindoro.

j. Project Schedule

This project will start on June, 2022 and it will be terminated on October, 2020.

k. Record Keeping

The proponents will keep the record systematically including all the expenses and

time spend in the entire production.
