VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS-2

Aim: To prepare standard solution of oxalic acid and using this solution to
find molarity and strength of given KMnO4 solution .

Theory :

Oxalic acid is COOH

| . 2H2O
COOH

Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent in the presence of

H2SO4.

KMnO4 oxidises oxalic acid into CO2 .

KMnO4 get reduced to Mn2+

Reaction between KMnO4 and Mohr’s salt is a redox reaction

2MnO4- + 16H+ + 5C2O42- - 2Mn2+ + 8H2O + 10 CO2

KMnO4 acts as a self indicator

The end point of titration is appearance of light pink colour.

Procedure:

To prepare 100ml of standard oxalic acid solution:

Weight of salt + Bottle =

Weight of bottle =

Mass of oxalic acid taken = ------ g

--- g x 1000
Molarity of oxalic acid solution = ---------------------

126 x 100

= -------- mol/L
To find molarity and strength of KMnO4 solution

Volume of oxalic acid solution taken = 20ml

Observation table
-------------------

Sl. No. Initial reading Final reading Vol. of KMnO4

Volume of KMnO4 solution = -------- ml

MKMnO4 x VKMnO4 2
-------------------- = ----
Moxalic acid X Voxalic acid 5

Molarity of KMnO4 = --------- mol/L

Strength of KMnO4 = Molarity x molar mass = ----- x 158 g/L

=-------- g/L

Result:

Molarity of KMnO4 = ------ mol/L

Strength of KMnO4 = ------ g/L
