( Serous membranes)

Serous membranes are closed spaces lined by a thin membrane and

contain a little film of serous fluid . They are invaginated by
organs & tendons , e.g. pleura (around lung), pericardium (around
heart), peritoneum (around viscera in abdomen), bursa & synovial
sheaths

Bursa : works as a lubricant and prevents friction of tendons with

bones or other structures. It presents commonly close to joints and
may communicate cavity , e.g. subscapularis bursa (shoulder),
suprapatellar bursa (friction knee)

synovial sheath:covers tendons to reduce friction between tendons

& surrounding structures. It is a tubular bursa around tendons

 (Cardiovascular system)
1.The heart: The heart pumps the blood to the body.It is supplied
by coronary arteries and venous drainage is by coronary sinus.It
consists of two atria right & left atrium) and two ventricles (right
& left ventricle). From ventricles arise the arteries , and into the
atrium drain the veins .

2. Blood vessels: Blood vessels are of three types: arteries , veins

& capillaries . The artery arises from ventricle of heart as large
artery (aorta & pulmonary artery ) and divides to give medium &
small arteries . The smallest branches are called arterioles
(diameter < 0.1 mm ) . The arterioles open into capillaries ( very
small network ) which form capillary bed ( in which interchange of
oxygen , nutrients & fluics occurs ), then capillary bed leads to thin
- walled venules which are joined to form veins that enlarge from
small , medium to large veins to end into superior & inferior vena
cava that open into right atrium of heart . The arteries carrying
oxygenated blood to body except pulmonary artery (which carry
non - oxygenated blood to lungs). The veins carry non-oxygenated
blood to heart except pulmonary veins (which carry oxygenated
blood to heart).

Arterial anastomosis:

They are communications between branches of two or more
neighboring arteries (more around joints)
.Function :
1. Equalize pressure between branches . ‫معادلة الضغط بين الفروع‬
2. Alternative channels of blood supply . .‫ قنوات بديمة إلمداد الدم‬.2
3. Preserve distal flow when joint flexed. .‫ الحفاظ عمى التدفق البعيد عند ثني المفصل‬.3

Examples of arterial anastomosis

1. Circulars arteriosus (circle of Willis in brain). )‫التعميمات الشريانية (دائرة ويميس في الدماغ‬.1
2. Around wrist & ankle ‫ حول المعصم والكاحل‬.2
3. Around elbow & knee. .‫ حول الركبة والكوع‬.3
4. Cruciate anastomosis around the neck of humerus
5. Cruciate anastomosis around the neck of femur.

End arteries : They are more frequently found in the vital organs
1. Anatomical end arteries: There is no arterial anatomosis cut of
blood supply that will lead to damage or death of area supplied by
that branch , e.g. retinal a . if blocked will lead to blindness .

Note : Blood circulates inside three systems of vessels

1. Pulmonary circulation: provides oxygenated blood from lung to

heart and gives non-oxygenated blood to lung .

2.Portal circulation : provides nutrients from intestine to the liver ,

then by hepatic veins into inferior vena cava .

3.: provides oxygen & nutrients from heart to body and gives non

The veins:
The veins have lower pressure than arteries and their walls are
thinner and have capacity to expand more than arteries.

Venules arise from capillaries and unite to form small veins . The
small veins are tributaries of medium then large veins .

Veins usually have valves so blood goes in one direction ( toward

Large veins ( e.g.) (superior and inferior vena cava) have a well -
developed tunica adventitia .

Medium veins (e.g. cephalic, basilic, small & great saphenous

veins) have valves. Some veins have no valves . Veins are
organized into superficial & deep veins

usually accompanied by two or more veins which are called venae
comitantes (accompanying veins), e.g. venae comitantes of

 Note: veins usually come out from organs ( drainage ) except
portal v . which enters the liver ( supply ) but drains gastro -

Capillaries :
Capillaries connect arteries to veins in most of the body, but in
some places they are connected directly (arteriovenous
anatomosis) or by large capillaries (sinusoids). Sinusoids are thin -
walled blood vessels with irregular cross diameter and they are
wider than capillaries .
