Research Title: STRUGGLES OF SHS STUDENTS ON MODULAR DISTANCE

LEARNING

Research Goals: Write down your research question, rationale, significance, plan to
do with your findings, and questions ask participants.

Research Rationale
The new coronavirus infection known as COVID-19 first appeared in December
2019 at the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, China (Wikipedia, 2020), and within a
few months it had become a global health emergency. It has quickly affected
thousands of people, who are sick or being killed as a result of the disease's spread.
The COVID-19 pandemic also caused widespread disruption, such as travel
restrictions, school closures, and a global economic downturn.
Most countries have temporarily closed educational institutions in order to
contain the virus's spread and reduce infections (Tria, 2020). Face-to-face interaction
between students and teachers has also been suspended within the school. The
Philippines is currently in the process of adapting to the new normal form of
education, and educators' continuous innovations, as well as the active participation of
other stakeholders, are the driving forces behind its success. The Department of
Education implemented Modular Distance Learning to ensure the continuity of
education and that each school continues to achieve its mission and vision of
providing quality education to every Filipino learner.
Distance Learning refers to a learning delivery modality, where learning takes
place between the teacher and the learners who are geographically remote from each
other during instruction. This modality has three types: Modular Distance Learning
(MDL), Online Distance Learning (ODL), and TV/Radio-Based Instruction.
(Quinones, 2020).
Modular learning is the most popular type of Distance Learning. This learning
modality is currently used in all public schools in the Philippines because, according
to a survey conducted by the Department of Education (DepEd), learning through
printed and digital modules emerged as the most preferred distance learning method
of parents with children enrolled this academic year (Bernardo, J).
The teacher is in charge of keeping track of the students' progress. The teacher
can be contacted by the students via e-mail, phone, text message/instant messaging,
and other means. When possible, the teacher should make home visits to students who
need remediation or assistance (Llego, n.d.). Printed Modules will be delivered to
students, parents or guardians by the teachers or through the Local Government
Officials.
The use of modules promotes self-directed learning. One of the advantages of
using modules for instruction is that students develop better self-study or learning
skills. Students actively participate in learning the concepts presented in the module.
They gain a sense of responsibility by completing the tasks outlined in the module.
The students progress on their own with little or no assistance from others. They are
empowered because they are learning how to learn (Nardo, M.T.B, 2017). Other
benefits of modular instruction include increased student choice and self-pacing,
increased variety and flexibility for teachers and staff, and increased adaptability of
instructional materials.
The disadvantages include greater self-discipline and self-motivation required
for students, increased preparation time and lack of concrete rewards for teachers and
staff, and greater administrative resources needed to track students and operate
multiple modules.
The primary goal of this research is to identify the challenges that teachers,
parents, and students face when implementing Modular Distance Learning in
Philippine public secondary schools.
Research Question/ Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine the struggles of Senior High School (SHS) on
Modular Distance Learning.
Specifically, it will answer the following specific questions:
1. How did the students adjusted to the transition of new method of education?
2. What are the disadvantages of Modular Distance Learning to the students?
3. How much time do you spend each day on answering the modules?
4. How stressful is Modular Distance Learning during the COVID-19 Pandemic?
5. How helpful your school has been in offering you the resources to learn from
home?
Significance of the Study
This study will be conducted to know the Struggles of Senior High School (SHS)
on Modular Distance Learning. It will be beneficial to the Students, Teachers, and
Parents because for they will be aware to the Struggles of Students on Modular
Distance Learning.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study will be conducted at Paoay National High School online due to
COVID-19 Pandemic. The study is Qualitative in nature. It will focus on the
Struggles of Senior High School Students on Modular Distance Learning. Online
Survey Questionnaire will be distributed to the respondents.
Place, Date/ Time and Duration of Study:
This study will be focusing on the Struggles of Senior High School on
Modular Distance Learning in the municipality of Paoay for the school year 2020-
2021. The data gathering will be conducted from end of May to June third week.
Data Collection Methods and Study Participants:
This study will be conducted in Paoay National High School online. The
researcher will use the random sampling method with thirty (30) Grade-11 students
and thirty (30) Grade-12 students as respondents.

Recruitment of participants / Sampling Procedure:

Random Sampling method will be use to conduct this study for us to determine
and evaluate the struggles of Senior High School Students on Modular Distance
Learning.

1. Due to the pandemic, we will conduct the study and gather data using messenger or
any online platforms.

Confidentiality agreement: list ways to ensure confidentiality, privacy, and safety of

participants and data collected.
1. After collecting the data needed on this study, rest assured that we will keep the
papers and hide it to a safe place.
2. The Respondents will stay anonymous before and after the survey.

Risk Assessment: list means of ensuring safety in materials, instruments, area, and
substances used:
