given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
To Shake or Not To Shake Hands
As we emerge from the pandemic ( 大 流 行 病 ), we’re starting to see the return of an age-old
custom: the handshake. Many of us went (21) _____ shaking someone else’s hands for about two years.
But as vaccination (接种疫苗) rates go up and social distancing restrictions fall, we’re starting to press
the flesh again.
Not everyone is happy that the handshake is making its way back. (22) _____ it’s a deep-rooted
way of expressing friendship and respect, some medical experts wish it were gone for good.
“It’s never been safe,” said Dr. Gregory Poland, a Mayo Clinic physician and professor.
“Handshaking carries the risk of transmitting a host of undesirable conditions,” Poland said.
Handshaking (23) _____ have started as an ancient custom to demonstrate to a stranger that you had no
weapon in your hand. But “you are, in fact, bearing at some level, a bioweapon” on your unwashed
hand, Poland said.
“It’s unfortunate that we needed a pandemic to shake some sense into people on how disease is
transmitted,” said Dr. Mark Sklansky, who’s worried that the opportunity (24) _____ (kill) the
handshake is slipping through our fingers.
Shaking hands as a symbol of friendship and trust (25) _____ (practice) by Babylonian kings and
ancient Romans and promoted by 18th-century Quakers. So far, it (26) _____ (become) an international

Making Fashion Accessible

People with Down syndrome ( 唐 氏 综 合 症 ) have shorter arms and legs, rounder bodies and
common sensitivities to tags and fabrics (布料), which make it difficult to find everyday clothes, like
jeans, that fit them and feel good.
A research study at the University of Delaware’s Innovation, Health and Design Lab is being
31 to create the United States’ first size guide for people with Down syndrome. The lab’s mission
is to provide a whole community with access to outfits that help them 32 with more
independence and confidence.
At the end of the study, the nearly 1,000 participating children with Down syndrome will each
receive free custom-made jeans that 33 their size and limited motor functions.
The lab, which opened in September 2018, is powered by the vision and 34 of Martha Hall.
Hall started her career designing cocktail dresses. But after she saw the work a professor was doing for
children with motor disabilities, she got inspired and 35 herself to improving minorities’ quality
of life through functional clothing afterwards. The lab projects address everything from inclusive
clothing and athletic wear to medical devices that can increase the 36 chances of premature
babies.
Some brands have tried to make sensory sensitive clothing lines 37 , but they’re not using
accurate size guides, said Hall. That’s where Hall’s student researchers come in. With the Down
syndrome size guide and jean project, they interview caregivers to learn the children’s 38 needs.
To produce the size chart, the lab uses a three-dimensional ( 三 维 的 ) scanner that scans each
participant’s body and creates a 3D colored 39 with exact measurements. Once all participants
are scanned, the company that created the machine will take the measurements, create a size guide and
sell the guide to companies, which will be able to design clothing based on accurate measurements for
this 40 of people.

III. Reading Comprehension

Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C
and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has amazing potential to change the world, and we’ve only just begun
to scratch the surface. As AI matures and people move further away from distinct programming and
monitoring of systems, unidentified bias ( 偏 见 ) might make decisions continue for a long time that
cause 41 harm for individuals and society. This bias might 42 input data or even the
algorithms (算法) themselves.
All too often, data sets are incomplete and the sample represented in the data set does not 43

高三英语 共 19页 第 4页
the population that the AI model is making predictions about—this is known as coverage bias. Some
other types of bias related to input data include sampling bias, where data is not collected randomly
from the target group, and participation bias, where users from certain groups 44 surveys at
different rates than users from other groups. Still, another more challenging bias to identify is
confirmation bias that occurs when a decision maker or analyst has a strong 45 belief or
experience that affects their ability to consider alternatives. This could lead one to more strongly 46
data that confirms a preexisting belief.
Bias resulting from AI algorithms themselves, or algorithmic bias, is equally 47 . One
example of algorithmic bias is implicit bias or unconscious bias, where data scientists 48 make
associations or assumptions based on their mental models and memories that affect data modeling
decisions. Implicit bias can 49 how data is collected and classified, or how systems are designed
and developed. As machines learn, their conclusions and decisions affect people. Ethical (道德的) AI
must understand these impacts and create governance and testing methods to 50 mistakes and
inaccuracies.
To create ethical AI, companies need to put the 51 of the individual at the center of data
innovation. This means thinking about 52 rights as human rights and developing a
comprehensive approach to data, including how we use AI.
Having 53 data practices for AI means having good AI governance. This governance not
only focuses on data and analytics but also understands the impacts of any given analysis and makes
sure it’s 54 and accurate. Good AI governance includes data responsibility as well as a
commitment to transparency (透明性).
None of this will be easy, but true innovation never is. By coming together and working on the
problem of bias now, before it becomes a(n) 55 force, businesses can help bring out the best AI
has to offer the world.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or
unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one
that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
United States government health officials are moving forward with a plan designed to keep
electronic cigarettes out of the hands of young people. The plan would restrict sales of most flavored
e-cigarettes at drug stores, gasoline stations and other businesses that sell them.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, first proposed the new rules last November.
They are the latest government effort to fight what health officials call an epidemic ( 泛 滥) of young
people using the devices.
Last week, the FDA announced that e-cigarette makers would need to restrict sales of most
flavored products. Sales would be limited to stores that ask people for their age upon entry or have a
separate, age-restricted area for vaping products or e-cigarettes. Companies would also be expected to
use outside identity-confirmation technology for sales involving the internet.
The FDA will also work to remove vaping products that clearly appeal to children. Companies
that do not follow the new requirements risk having their products pulled from the U.S. market, the
FDA said. The restrictions will not include three flavors that the FDA says appeal more to adults than
teenagers.
Anti-smoking activists have questioned whether the new FDA restrictions will be enough to stop
the rise in teenage vaping. The FDA has little power over how stores sell vaping products. Instead,
critics say the agency is largely telling companies to self-police.
Erika Sward is with the American Lung Association, which has called on the FDA to remove all
flavored e-cigarettes from the market. Sward said the FDA’s decision to leave out three flavors is a
mistake. Studies show those flavors are used by nearly half of teenagers who vape.
The new rules are expected to heavily affect small businesses. Groups representing those stores
have fought against the plan since it was first proposed last November. The restrictions are expected to
have less of an effect on vape specialty shops. That is because many of them already require store
workers to ask people for identity documents.

56. Why did FDA propose the new rules?

A. To prevent teenagers vaping. B. To stop stores selling e-cigarettes.
C. To reduce vape specialty shops. D. To limit the flavors of e-cigarettes.
57. According to the new rules, most flavored e-cigarettes are limited to stores that _____.
A. have a separate area for teenagers B. impose restrictions on maximum purchases
C. follow age control requirements D. involve both offline and online sales
58. What is anti-smoking activists’ attitude towards the new rules?
A. Optimistic. B. Suspicious. C. Curious. D. Uninterested.
59. What can be learned about the new rules proposed by FDA?
A. Small businesses disapprove of them.

China’s policy of planting trees is likely playing a significant role in tempering its climate
impacts. An international team has identified two areas in the country where the scale of carbon dioxide
absorption by new forests has been underestimated. Taken together, these areas account for a little over
35% of China’s entire land carbon “sink”, the group says.
A carbon sink is any area that absorbs more carbon than it releases, such as forests, thereby
lowering the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.
China is one of the world’s major sources of human-produced carbon dioxide. But it has stated an
intention to peak the emissions before 2030 and then to move to carbon neutrality by 2060.
“Achieving China’s net-zero target by 2060 will involve a massive change in energy production
and also the growth of sustainable land carbon sinks,” said co-author Prof Yi Liu at the Institute of
高三英语 共 19页 第 8页
Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. “The afforestation (植树造
林) activities described in our Nature paper will play a role in achieving that target,” he said.
China’s increasing leafiness has been evident for some time. Billions of trees have been planted in
recent decades, to tackle desertification and soil loss.
The new study modifies estimates for how much CO2 all these extra trees could be taking up as
they grow. The latest analysis examined a host of data sources. These consisted of forestry records,
satellite remote-sensing measurements of vegetation greenness, soil water availability, and observations
of CO2, again made from space but also from direct sampling of the air at ground level.
The two previously under-appreciated carbon sink areas are centred on China’s southwest, in
Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi provinces; and its northeast, particularly Heilongjiang and Jilin
provinces.
Prof Shaun Quegan from Sheffield University, UK, studies Earth’s carbon balance but was not
involved in this research. He said the extent of the northeast sink was not a surprise to him, but the
southwest one was. But he cautioned that new forests’ ability to draw down carbon declines with time
as the growth rate declines and the systems move towards a more steady state.
Richard Black, director of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), a non-profit
think-tank working on climate change and energy issues, said, “However, although the forest sink is
bigger than thought, no one should mistake this as providing a ‘free pass’ way to reach net zero. For
one thing, carbon absorption will be needed to make up for ongoing emissions of all greenhouse gases,
not just CO2; for another, the carbon balance of China’s forests may be compromised ( 折 中 ) by
climate change impacts, as we’re seeing now in places such as California, Australia and Russia.”

63. The word “tempering” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “_____”.

A. assessing B. solidifying C. lessening D. authorizing
64. What can be learned about the new study?
A. It finds that China has stopped its desertification by planting trees.
B. It is based on data from both the ground and the satellites.
C. It warns that China will peak its emissions before 2030.
D. It overlooks the roles that the land carbon sinks play.
65. According to Prof Shaun Quegan and Richard Black, _____.
A. forest sinks absorb less carbon dioxide when they are growing
B. new forests are very likely to guarantee the target of carbon neutrality
C. the southwest sink won’t draw down as much carbon as the northeast one

高三英语 共 19页 第 9页
D. many other factors need to be taken into account when assessing the forest sink
66. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. Greenhouse Gas Emission Largely Reduced
B. Roles of Carbon Sinks Proved by New Study
C. China’s Forest Carbon Absorption Underestimated
D. Climate Impacts Balanced Due to China’s Afforestation

Section C
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box.
Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

A. Lying, it seems, is becoming an acceptable and even admirable social skill.

B. A lie is only wrong because it might be discovered, and cause hurt and upset.
C. But the Cahoot research also showed that lying is on increasingly difficult ground.
D. We, as a result, are all on the receiving end of a great many more lies than in the past.
E. They are so emotionally and intellectually evolved now that they are lying more, on a regular
basis.
F. They either stop potential lovers by asking for too much, or they invite lies that will be
discovered quickly.
The Truth Is Out
Human beings are not born liars, but the moment we can form complete sentences we begin lying
to protect the feelings of others, to avoid punishment and conflict, and, most frequently, because lying
gives advantages the truth wouldn’t provide. Lying gets results.
One study by Bella DePaulo, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, found lies
played a part in 30-38 percent of people’s social interactions. Socially skillful people told a lot more
lies than their more awkward coworkers. 67
Nowhere is this more obvious than on the singles scene. First dates have always involved a certain
amount of self-boast, but some singles now regard out-and-out deceit (欺骗) as a reasonable strategy.
Experts believe that increased competition and the higher expectations among singles, along with
the popularity of Internet dating, are encouraging outbreaks of deceitfulness. The problem is that many
singles are presenting images of themselves that are impossible to live up to, and costing their already
limited chances of long-term love in the process. 68
Of course, long-term lovers aren’t immune (不受影响) to the conflict-avoiding, problem-burying
高三英语 共 19页 第 10页
lie either. Once again, a pleasant singles scene coupled with unrealistic expectations has put new
pressure on less-than-faultless relationships and tempted many into more serious deception. A study
last year by Cahoot found that a majority of partners lie to each other about their personal financial
situation. Other studies have found that women appreciate wise lies about their weight or looks.
69 In this context, might a policy of honesty at all costs upset the delicate balance of
deceit that we’ve involved in by chance over the past few years? Could lying, as some people suggest,
be little more than the latest social art?
Possibly. After all, few of us feel that lying is wrong any more. 70 But then that, of
course, is the real issue. We might be great and frequent liars these days, but we’re not any better at
recovering or forgiving, if we discover that we’ve been lied to.

IV. Summary Writing

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage
in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

71. Building Trust in Virtual Environments

Research into the science behind human communication tells us that up to 90 percent of what we
tell one another is nonverbal. It’s the countless eye, facial and body movements we flash one another
that help us understand someone’s intention and determine if we should trust them.
The challenge we all face is figuring out ways to build trust in virtual environments. Sure, we have
some interactions on videoconferences, but the physical cues ( 暗 示 ) we’ve become accustomed to
reacting to are restricted and masked. This is forcing us to develop new ways to trust one another. Good
leaders are working to engineer those opportunities to build trust in their now virtual teams.
There are lessons we can learn from global multinational companies that have figured out how to
make virtual relationships work over the past few decades. If you have vital business partners, or even
employees working overseas, you have, at best, limited opportunities to meet them in person. What
these companies have learned is that actions speak louder than words, and people base a simple
analysis of trustworthiness on delivering on commitments. People that do are trustworthy; people that
don’t aren’t.
When you hire virtual workers and get a new virtual team member, there is the question of
whether someone has the background and experience they claim to have. That means we all need to
lean on tools and techniques to help certify (证实) someone’s background. Some companies have built
talent databases in which people can search their teammates and confirm their impressive backgrounds.
高三英语 共 19页 第 11页
Knowing that you are working with a certified superstar builds trust.
Finding ways to get someone to prove their trustworthiness by doing what they say they will and
backing up their claims of experience will go a long way in helping you adapt to the new reality that we
work in.

about it, read the four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best
answer to the question you have heard.

1. M: Excuse me, but I’d like to draw some cash.

W: Will you step right over to the second window, please?
Q: Where does the conversation most probably take place?
2. M: So when are the other guys going to get here? The train is leaving in 10 minutes.
W: It’s 10:30 already. They’re supposed to be here by now. I told everybody to meet here
by 10:15.
Q: When is the train leaving?
3. W: Can you believe it? A twenty-page term paper and the final exam! What does Professor
Johnson think?
M: Wait a moment. I’m sure what he said was either one or the other.
Q: What does the man mean?

M: It’s a good thing I leave a spare one with my neighbor. I am going to stop by, ask for it
and get my books.
Q: What will the man most probably do next?
7. W: It’s no use. I’ll never learn to swim as well as you do.

Q: What can be learned from the conversation?

Q: What does the man imply?
10. W: I studied French in high school, but I never really learned it until this summer in Paris.
M: Really using the language makes all the difference, doesn’t it?
Q: What does the man mean?

Section B
Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages and one longer conversation, and
you will be asked several questions on each of them. The passages and the conversation will
be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read
the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one is the best answer to the
question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

Gardens can be incredible spaces. They not only provide us with food and other
resources to keep our bodies healthy, but they can also be great for our emotional well-being.
Researchers note that gardening is beneficial because it combines physical activity with
social interaction and exposure to nature and sunlight. Tending your own garden over time

can also promote healing and mental well-being.
One study shows gardening can help you to develop an ability to cope with difficult
situations. Not everything in a garden will go according to plan. And small disappointments
and frustrations will help you learn how to cope when other things go wrong. Meanwhile, you
can learn patience, and begin to appreciate that there are things outside of your control. With
each small success, however, your confidence in your own skills and abilities will continue to
grow.
 What’s more, tending a garden can help you feel more connected to the natural world,
and also, of course, to others who might garden alongside you. Whether you garden on your
own or with others, this can help you feel less lonely.
Additionally, gardening can help people heal after mental health problems, and help them
to find their place in the world. As we can see, gardens grow more than just plants.

Nowadays, pet products companies offer a wide range of smart pet devices. These

devices include automatic feeders, smart waterers, self-cleaning litter boxes and

air-conditioning smart pet houses.

Guo Weixue is the co-founder and CEO of a pet products company in Shanghai.

According to Guo, his company aims to make pet ownership easier and more efficient. It

offers pet owners a one-stop destination to access everything from pet tech solutions, pet

food, pet care and medical services. While pet owners are away from home, pets will be taken

better care of with the help of its pet products and services.

For instance, pet owners can schedule feeding and control the smart pet feeders on their

smartphone with the app while they are away from home. And the company’s air-conditioning

smart pet house will allow consumers to remotely regulate the temperature inside the pet

data such as resting time.

Guo said his company earned nearly 500 million yuan last year, and he expected to see

Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

M: Jenny, I’m planning to get a new smartphone.

W: Why? Is there something wrong with your old one? We got ours at the same time,

remember? I don’t feel the need to get a new one yet.

M: I’m always running out of storage and the battery is dying faster than before.

W: Really?

M: I think I’d be more productive for work if I updated my phone.

W: How so?

M: It would make communication easier, and a new phone would be faster.

W: I know you are using your phone for work more. But are you sure you need a new one?

Often a new model just means a new size, color or some other small features.

M: I need a phone with an up-to-date operating system so that my productivity rate stays high.

The new phone I’m planning to buy has very helpful new applications, too.

W: Well, I guess … if you need it for work.

M: What about you? Yours must not be as efficient as it used to be.

W: Well, my phone does die faster than it used to. But there is so much to learn when you get

a new phone. It took me a long time to get used to the one I have now.

M: You still should think about it. There’s been a huge increase in people stealing data from

phones. A new phone can keep all of our information safer because it has better security.
