1. ABOUT MOBILE SYSTEM

A mobile phone is a wireless handheld device that allows users to make and receive calls and to
send text messages, among other features. A modern mobile system is a tiny computer which are
packed with many additional features, such as web browsers, games, cameras, video players and
even navigational systems.
Mobile Operating System:
1. It controls the entire functioning of the mobile with the help of various mobile applications
and wireless communication.
2. It can handle endless applications such as
 SMS(Short Message Service)
 Making call using radio transmission
 Supporting Multimedia format(audio/video/graphical)
 Camera Facilities
 Handling Touchscreen
3. Limitations of Mobile Operating System:
 Less battery power.
 Connectivity problems.
 Mobile CPU speed.
 Memory
 Display constraints
 Size constraints of input device.
Functional Components of Mobile system.

CPU

1) Mobile Processor(CPU):
 It is the brain of the smartphone.
 CPU receives the command and execute every command, performing billions of
calculations per second.
 A Mobile Processor consist of three units.
 Applications processing Unit(APU)
 Communications Processing Unit
 Graphics Processing Unit(GPU)
Applications processing Unit (APU):
 It works the same way as the CU (Control Unit) of the Computer system.
 It is responsible for controlling and governing all the tasks and execution takes place
inside the mobile system.
Graphics Processing Unit (GPU):
 GPU handles all the graphics related processing of the mobile CPU with the help of
APU.
Communications Processing Unit:
 This subsystem is responsible for making and receiving the phone calls on a
smartphone.
 It has a digital signal processor that coordinates with RF Transceiver/Receiver and
Audio subsystem.

NOTE: (1) RF Transceiver/Receiver or Radio System Management unit is responsible for

connecting the SIM (Subscriber Identity Mode) to the base stations through
radio signals .Cellular networks eg-3G.4G, 5G.
(2) Audio subsystem is responsible for converting voice signals to digital signals
and vice versa. It has 2 two subparts DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) and
ADC (Analog to Digital Converter).
(3) CODEC: A codec is a software used to encode and decode digital data. Codec is
short for coder-decoder.

SoC (System on a Chip): All the functional components of the mobile system are integrated
on a single chip called SoC(System on a Chip).
SoC=CPU + GPU + Display Processor + Radio signal Processor + Video Processor

2) Camera Unit(Image Signal Processor):

 It provide image processing interface.
 It provides a complete set of image processing operations like instant image capture, High
Resolution Support, Image stabilization and other image enhancement.
3) Display Subsystem:
 It provides display facilities and touch sensitive interface.
 The instructions which is given by the user through touch based and other sensors will be
accepted by this subsystem and responds to it.
4) Memory Unit:
 Mobile memory unit is used for carrying out various task and running several applications.
 Memory is classified into two types. RAM and ROM.
 RAM(Random Access Memory):No smartphone can function without RAM and
memory(system storage).Whatever the applications we are working upon are first loaded
into RAM and acted upon by mobile processor.
 ROM (Read Only Memory): It allows the user to do read only operation. Smart Phone’s
Operating System (OS) is residing in ROM and gets loaded into RAM, when we start
running the application.
5.Power Management/Battery Unit :
A mobile phone battery is the main source of power supply for the device. All the phones
are equipped with lithium ion batteries. A lithium polymer battery is the latest type of battery
being used in smartphones.
Battery Capacity is a measure that indices how much electricity a battery can give for smart
phones, capacity is measured in milliampere-hours(MAh).The larger capacity of the battery
provides a longer operation time without recharging.
