Question #1

What other everyday devices apart from computer have processor and a
memory? Choose any three devices and discuss how the processor is used in
those devices.

DEVICES HAVING PROCESSOR

There are many devices with processors but some of them are those which we use every day.
Some examples are as follows:

SMART PHONE
Smartphone processor, also known as chipset, is a component that controls everything going
on in your smartphone and ensures it functions correctly. You can compare it to the brain of
the human body. Every action you perform on your smartphone goes straight to the
processor. These actions are then converted to visual changes on your screen, and all of this
happens in a split second. We use smart phones daily and all the functions we perform on it
are done by the processor. For example, you are opening a few pictures in an app. This action
is registered by the processor and stored in the memory of your device. That is the fetch
phase. The action is then translated to ones and zeros in the decode phase. The instructions
are now saved in a language your smartphone understands. It is ready for the execute phase.
The processor transmits the ones and zeros, and you can see it all happen on the screen. Your
pictures are opened. Finally, the executed instructions are saved in the register memory
during the save phase. Afterwards, the process will restart.
The speed at which a processor processes a certain action depends on several factors, like the
number of processor cores. The clock speed is another important aspect. Processors with low
clock speeds and (sometimes) a smaller number of processor cores work more slowly than
processors with high clock speeds and many processor cores. Makes sense, as that's what
you're paying for, in the end. Actions performed on a cheaper smartphone will be processed
more slowly than on a more expensive model.

CORES OF PROCESSOR:
A processor, also known as CPU, consists of multiple cores: Dual, Quad, Hexa, and Octa
core. What do these cores do exactly? Processor cores distribute the work that comes in when
you use your phone. One core has a maximum number of instructions it can process within a
certain amount of time. If you perform a lot of actions on your smartphone, a queue of sorts
will form. If this queue gets too long, part of it will go to the next core. This ensures your
smartphone will keep functioning smoothly.
IN SHORT, the processor of your smartphone is the component that converts all your actions
into visual changes on the screen. It can do this thanks to the number of cores and a certain
clock speed. The number of cores ensures actions are always processed on time. The clock
speed determines the number of instructions that can be executed per second. The higher the
clock speed, the faster the smartphone. My tip: do not just look at the number of cores, but
also at the clock speed.

CAMERA
We also use cameras in our daily life. This is also a device which uses processors. These are
also called image processors. An image processor, also known as an image processing
engine, image processing unit (IPU), or image signal processor (ISP), is a type of media
processor or specialized digital signal processor (DSP) used for image processing, in digital
cameras or other devices.[1][2] Image processors often employ parallel computing even with
SIMD or MIMD technologies to increase speed and efficiency. The digital image processing
engine can perform a range of tasks. To increase the system integration on embedded devices,
often it is a system on a chip with multi-core processor architecture.
Image processor users are using industry standard products, application-specific standard
products (ASSP) or even application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) with trade names:
Canon's is called DIGIC, Nikon's Expeed, Olympus' TruePic, Panasonic's Venus Engine and
Sony's Bionz. Some are known to be based on the Fujitsu Milbeaut, the Texas Instruments
OMAP, Panasonic MN103, Zoran Coach, Altek Sunny or Sanyo image/video processors.
ARM architecture processors with its NEON SIMD Media Processing Engines (MPE) are
often used in mobile phones.

PROCESSOR BRANDS:
1. ATI - Image on (graphics co-processor used in many early mobile photos to offer
camera image signal processing [3])
2. Canon - DIGIC (based on Texas Instruments OMAP) [4]
3. Casio - EXILIM engine
4. Google - Pixel Visual Core [5]
5. Nikon - Expeed (based on Fujitsu Milbeaut) [7]
6. Olympus - TruePic (based on Panasonic MN103/MN103S)
7. Panasonic - Venus Engine (based on Panasonic MN103/MN103S)
8. Qualcomm - Qualcomm Spectra
9. Sony - Bionz
10. HTC - Image Sense

SPEED:
With the ever-higher pixel count in image sensors, the image processor's speed becomes
more critical: photographers do not want to wait for the camera's image processor to
complete its job before they can carry on shooting - they do not even want to notice some
processing is going on inside the camera. Therefore, image processors must be optimized to
cope with more data in the same or even a shorter period.

SMART TV
A smart TV, also known as a connected TV (CTV), is a traditional television set with
integrated Internet and interactive Web 2.0 features, which allows users to stream music and
videos, browse the internet, and view photos. Smart TV platforms or middleware have a
public software development kit (SDK) and/or native development kit (NDK) for apps so that
third-party developers can develop applications for it, and an app store so that the end-users
can install and uninstall apps themselves. Most of the smart TV’s have 8 GB of memory.
While do have option of Memory Card. Smart TVs require a computer chip to handle all of
the features that make it Smart, which is why it’s important to consider this. The better the
processor the quicker your apps, games and features are ready to watch on the telly. For
example, the multi-screen function is a feature that really benefits from a good processor.
Whether you like to post on Facebook while you watch the football or browse the internet
while watching a movie – multi-tasking is easy with a powerful processor.
