Cyclone Description

Cyclone Mahina was a cyclone that struck Australia on March the


fourth, 1899, it was known as the deadliest and most dangerous
Cyclone cyclones that was ever recorded in the southern hemisphere. It first
impacted Bathurst Bay, Cape York Peninsula in Queensland lasting
Mahina
for 6 days and dissipated on the tenth of March. The result of the
storm, ended with over 300 people’s death while the cost of
repairing was about 85020.73 dollars.

Cyclone Tracy was a small but intense cyclone (only about 50km in
radius) categorised as a category 4 storm. It hit Darwin on Christmas
Cyclone Day 1974 and reached wind speeds of 217km/hr, overall, it lasted
Tracy about 6-7 hours. 71 people were killed, out of which 16 were lost at
sea with 80% of Darwin’s buildings destroyed. In the end, it costed
about 7.2 billion dollars to repair.

Cyclone Yasi entered Queensland’s coast on the 3rd of February


Cyclone 2011, with winds as fast as 285km/hr. Unlike Cyclone Tracy, this
Yasi cyclone was not small, it was 500 kilometres in diameter with the
eye (centre of storm) 30km wide. The cost of repairs was around 3.5
billion dollars, one person was killed.
